Anyone got a quick recap of how this game played out? Did Lexington Catholic dominate all game or pull away at the end?

It was a tight game until about halfway through the 3rd and LC started to pull away. The game wasn't fully put away until about 3-4 min left in the game. Much closer game than the score shows.

LC moved the ball well offensively with a nice run/pass balance. Boone has a real nice RB in Cahill (sp?). He had 200+ yards rushing plus another good amount in receiving/return yards. LC was exposed in the run game giving up some long runs but Boone was one dimensional and didn't have much of a passing game other than screen plays so LC was able to load up on the run and take control of the game.

Watch the replay here:

Thought that I saw that LC was up 14-12 at some point in the 3rd quarter when I was checking the highlights.

For Boone it was a good showing.

For LexCath, run defense guys, the same as last year.

Glad to hear Boone kept it close for much of the game.

As noted, Knight run D needs work. Also, KO team. Boone second score was KO return. Last year Knights gave up KO returns for TDs in a number of games.

I'll comment on the first half as the game got away from BC in the 4th quarter. BC really could have won this game. LC isn't the same team it was last season and neither is BC. LC lacks the offensive weapons it had last year.

The BC defense opened up pretty strong against LC with a 3 and out. The BC offense was able to move the ball with the run. The O-Line was opening up some tremendous holes and Cahill is one of the fastest backs in our region. He exploited the LC defense once he found an opening. He ran inside and outside with equal ability. It was fun to watch him run.

LC's first 3 possessions were three and out. They really couldn't run the ball against the BC defense. I think they had 1 net yrd rushing in the first half. Their game relies on spreading out the defense and throw a short pass to the outside hoping there are not enough defenders to get through the blockers and make a stop.

LC scored primarily because of field position. LC's first score came when a short punt by BC and a long return by LC gave LC the ball deep in Rebel territory. LC a a couple of positive plays but the defense shut them down and it was 3rd and long. Then QB connected on a long pass in the middle of the field for the TD. That made it 0-7 LC.

BUt Boone came right back with a 90 yrd kick return TD by Rondell Douglas. The XP was no good and the score was 6-7.

LC got ball in good field position actually on the Rebel side of the field. BC defense forced a punt and BC took possession on their own 1 yrd line.

The running game was working and Boone got away from its own end zone on the first play. BC got a couple of 1st downs then Cahill broke a 70+ yard run to score. Boone went for two and did not cross the goal line. Score now BC 12-7.

LC started on is own 40 yrd line and the passing game got them to the BC one. They scored on a run up the middle. XP good. 12-14 LC ahead.

BC got the ball on its own 25 after the kick-off. Then with a combination of runs and passes BC took the ball down inside the LC 10 yrd line. One pass combination went for 40 yrds from Ruberg to Douglass. A short run followed by a play to stop the clock. A penalty drove them back 5 yrds. An incomplete pass on third led to a field goal attempt with under 10 seconds to go. It was blocked and then LC took a knee to end the half. Had there been more time on the clock, I believe Boone would have punched it in. LC's defense did not seem to be able to stop them for long. In this case, the clock was LC's best defender.

This was a really interesting game to watch. BC's defense was doing the job most of the time and there were a few big plays that allowed a couple of scores. BC's offense had some pristine moments. The line play was a positive. It was beautiful to see the curtain open up and then the lone person through the hole was a RB in Carolina Blue going for a first down. I liked the run game. The LC defense would make a couple of plays, stuff the run and keep the back from getting outside. This did not discourage the back or the lineman from trying it again. The RB's continued to pound the ball and wait for the opportunity when open space presented itself. There is a lot to work with there. The defense also was a bright spot for most of the game. They just need to work on not giving up the big gain. The QB is elusive and able to make something from nothing. He will continue to improve as the season goes on and he gains experience at the position. With the running game as it is, the receivers will find themselves with some opportunities.

I really believe BC could have had a solid lead going into the half but poor field position limited their opportunities while providing the LC offense a short field most of the first half. I imagine special teams will get some attention this week. As a BC fan, I feel really good about the team. I am looking for that first W in the column. It will happen soon. Let's go Rebels. Things are looking up!

From the LC side of the field, I saw a different game.

1st quarter, neither team played well and I attribute that it being the 1st game for both teams; lots of nervous energy and getting acclimated to the speed of the game. In the 2nd quarter, the LC offense managed to put up 14 pts in the 2nd Qtr and missed a filed goal. Boone County also scored twice in the 2nd Qtr; one of the scores was on a kick off return immediately following LC'S initial touchdown.

I do not think anyone expected the game to be 14-12 at half time but it was evident that BC was much better than in the prior year and that LC needed to play better if they expected to win.

In the 2nd half, I thought Catholic came out and began to execute much better and that may have been attributable to the fact that Boone County began to tire while Catholic was also able to continue to rotate its players throughout the game. In the 2nd half, it never felt as if LC was not in control of the game.

Boone County has a couple of really good running backs, but the offense is one dimensional. Defensively, the front 7 is good but lacks depth. Not having their kicker (soccer player) at the game put Boone County at a distinct disadvantage.

Boone County is a much better team than last year and I expect that they will win 3 or 4 games.

Catholic has 11 underclassmen who are expected to contribute; as the season progresses the team will play with more confidence. The talent is definitely there to make another run at the State Championship.

Boone County kicker came in after the game started. He was playing goalie for the BC soccer team earlier in the evening against Tates Creek.

Thanks for adding your perspective @Iggyfan. It is a valid perspective. Thank you for the positive comments concerning the Rebels. Good luck to LC for the coming season.
