Facility wise I think that I would have to go with Ryle. As a player Holmes was by far the best place to play a game. Good floor and feel of a "Big Time" arena with the height of the ceiling and stands extending well above floor level. CovCath has the best atmosphere.

 

I would also give a big thumbs up to the changes at Dixie. New lobby, fresh paint and new lighting have done wonders.

 

Worst by far, as player and fan is Highlands followed closely by Holy Cross.

Agree about HHS gym. Highlands has begun an extensive rehab project, which I believe in the last phase includes a new gym

If you are going to throw Mason Co. in the mix, then I will cast my vote for Gallatin Co. The only gym that even rates with Gallatin in the 9th is Ryle.

 

:thumb: Gallatin Ctys Gym IMO is absolutely one of the very best. Very bright and clean and some of the nicest people there to greet you whenever you happen to play there.

What about Scheben Gym at Lloyd High School? Plenty of seating, good concessions, good parking, good floor.

Remember the old Ludlow gym in the senior high building. The wals were about two feet from the baseline, stands on one side that held maybe two hundred people, a floor with moguls, and a really scary visitor's locker room.

Nothing much has changed in that old gym either with the exception of the floor. Coaching various middle school teams at Ludlow and I get the opportunity practice in there quite often.

Don't know if you remember but they have those old heaters all the way around the gym on the walls and when the place was full they would start heating up and clanging and cracking and the place would feel like a Sauna..

How about Dayton's old gym? Band box seating with the stage right at the end line. The visitor locker room may have been in with the boilers. Shower heads hung in the center of the room and I think you left the showers dirtier than you entered.

 

Most of the schools have seen their facilities upgraded tremendously in the last 30 years.

Even those with the original buildings have improved floors and lighting, Bellevue, CovCath, Boone etc.

 

Highlands doesn't need the makeover. I don't think the improvements there can be made in that building. Hopefully they are looking at a larger facility.

Campbell County Middle School is the best gym in NKY IMO.

Scott Count's old gym. Played there in 95' felt like I was in the movie Hoosiers. Best atmosphere also.

However, the railings seperating the lower level from the upper level create a viewing obstruction that greatly annoys me.

Now it has been converted into a school cafeteria. Matter of fact Bellevue was the last public school in Kentucky to have an on campus cafeteria.

I can vaugely remember Newport's old gym. Can remember sitting in a packed house watching some Holmes/newport games in the late 70's there.

Try it and I think you'll like it!! The 10th region tourney with 6000-7000 people is something to see!!:thumb:

Played in the 10th Region Finals game twice, once as a soph ans the second as a senior.

 

Fieldhouse is rocking place to play. My senior year when we played St. Pat's in the semifinals of the 10th the fieldhouse was packed and I mean pack (People walking from DaShays just to see the game when we pulled up around 7:00). Wasn't an empty seat for the semis ot the finals. Amazing. I would venture to say that there isn't a place like it in KY come regionals time.

 

My worst as a player was St. Pat's Maysville, closely tied with NCC because the floor was completely unplayable(like playing basketball on ice).

Newport's gym is under appreciated IMO. Size wise it can compete with any other. Tradition and atmosphere wise is where it lacks.

 

Highlands gym has alot of tradition, but size and engineering of that building are just terrible. I never liked playing there because the wall on the right end of the scorer's table was so close to the baseline.

Dirty? Are you being serious? I completely disagree with that. And you always have to mention the student section, and how it is the worst in NKY. We are not talking about the kids, we are talking about their facilities. So whatever grudge you hold with the Lloyd kids shouldn't be brought out in this discussion.

Highlands gym needs a wrecking ball.....horrible... they have replaced some planks of wood in a corner and it is a different color than the rest of the stained wood. It is total Ghetto ! I hope they get the rest of the renovations done quickly so they can start looking at building a Ryle'esque type gymnasium.
