Greatest Left Tackle of All time

Featured Replies

Had this discussion with a friend who is my age. My vote, Anthony Munoz.

Who ya got?

I have an admitted bias but I also think Munoz is the best ever.

In the past decade or two, I think Ogden and Pace have gotten a lot of pub (and deservedly so)...but, I'm with you. Give me Munoz without any hesitation.

They have all been measured against #78 since he came into the league, Michael Anthony Munoz.

Forrest Gregg or Roosevelt Brown.

It used to be that teams put their best tackle on the right side. Guys like Lawrence Taylor made offenses rethink where to place their best lineman. That being the case, we are probably going to be looking for someone from more recent times, like Munoz, than my two suggestions.

To answer this question you have to ask two other questions (that I dont know the answer too).

1. Who was the best before Munoz?

2. Who has been the best since Munoz?

Larry Allen 1994-2007

Bob (Boomer) Brown (T) 1964-1973

Roosevelt Brown (T) 1953-1965

Dan Dierdorf (T) 1971-1983

Forrest Gregg (T-G) 1956, 1958-1971

Lou Groza (T) (Also PK) 1946-1959, 1961-1967

Walter Jones 1997-2008

Mike McCormack (T) 1951, 1954-1962

Randall McDaniel 1988-2001

Ron Mix (T) 1960-1969, 1971

Anthony Muñoz (T) 1980-1992

Jonathan Ogden 1996-2007

Orlando Pace 1997-2009

Willie Roaf (T) 1993-2005

Art Shell (T) 1968-1982

Will Shields 1993-2006

Jackie Slater (T) 1976-1995

Bob St. Clair (T) 1953-1963

Ron Yary (T) 1968-1982

Gary Zimmerman (T) 1986-1997

I may not still be correct, heck, I may have never been, but I still believe these are the tips of the spear in these positions:

OT -- Munoz

OG -- John Hannah

C -- Mike Webster

Agree with all of those.

Completed the list...

I would love to find a position in there for Bruce Matthews but he split his time among various positions so much.

Jackie Slater is my man...19 seasons and always at or near the top of the league...but I am an admitted homer for those old Rams!

Wow, I nearly forgot about him. What a stud.

Saw very little love for Art Shell who was dominant in opening holes for the Raiders. Was instrumental on 3 Super Bowl Winners.

Joe Jacoby of the Redskins might garnish some conversation.
