Ortiz bobbleheads 'racially insensitive' as giveaway canceled - NY Daily News

Red Sox cancel David Ortiz bobblehead giveaway because mementos were 'racially insensitive,' ‘unacceptable’

The Red Sox are no longer giving out Big Papi bobbleheads Tuesday night after a Big Mistake.

Although the club had already tweeted out pictures of the David Ortiz bobblehead it planned to gift the first 15,000 fans attending the Red Sox-Yankees opener at Fenway Park, the team said in a statement the mementos are "unacceptable" and "not appropriate for distribution," with team president Sam Kennedy later clarifying that they could be viewed as "racially insensitive."

Kennedy added that the facial features of the bobblehead were what the club was concerned about.

"I had a chance to review the bobbleheads for the first time this afternoon when they arrived," Kennedy told Masslive.com. "I felt they were an inaccurate portrayal of David and I personally felt there were offensive facial features that were racially insensitive. I figured if I felt that way and my colleagues did, others would, too, so we made the decision to redo them. We'll have a revised and appropriate version made and we're very sorry for the inconvenience to fans."

The bobblehead depicted Ortiz's "this is our city" speech, which the designated hitter gave after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

This was to be the last of five Ortiz giveaways this season, the slugger's final one before retiring.

The Red Sox said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon: "We will be issuing new David Ortiz bobbleheads to all ticketed fans at a later date. Information on how fans can secure their item will be posted on redsox.com shortly after tonight's game. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience."

What am I missing? Granted I am no expert on David Ortiz's facial features but that seems to look like him. Maybe if I blow the photo up it will look different but I'm not seeing what the issue is.

The last one shown, if it's correct, is pretty lame looking. It has bucked teeth and light colored lips. :eyeonyou:

And by the way, wasn't the design ran by the Red Sox marketing department before THOUSANDS of the bobbleheads were produced?
