FarBeyondDriven Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Black Lives Matter Releases Policy Agenda - NBC News The six platform demands are: 1. End the war on black people. 2. Reparations for past and continuing harms. 3. Divestment from the institutions that criminalize, cage and harm black people; and investment in the education, health and safety of black people. 4. Economic justice for all and a reconstruction of the economy to ensure our communities have collective ownership, not merely access. 5. Community control of the laws, institutions and policies that most impact us. 6. Independent black political power and black self-determination in all areas of society. To achieve those demands the group offered a set of solutions that include the demilitarization of police and an end to systemic attacks on black youth, including black members of the LGBTQ community. They call for the passing of state and federal laws that acknowledge and address the impacts of slavery and the passage of H.R. 40 to form a commission to study reparations proposals. Another of the recommendations calls for the "retroactive decriminalization and immediate release of all people convicted of drug offenses, sex work-related offenses and youth offenses."
lawildcat Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 What does America get in return? What does America get if these demands are not met?
Getslow Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 What does America get in return? What does America get if these demands are not met? 1) The knowledge that we're beginning to undo decades of mistrust which followed in the wake of centuries of outright oppression and political and economic disenfranchisement. We might just make American cities better places to live. 2) More protests, I assume. Number six is problematic. I want to know more details.

Not really sure I completely agree with all the other ones either. Also diving into the link and reading, some of the explanations are pretty ridiculous, IMO. But people wanted a plan and suggestions, let's see how they deal with said suggestions.
lawildcat Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Any platform that discusses reparations should never be considered, IMO.
bugatti Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 This won't take long to get shot down. What are your positions on the six listed? I have no clue what #s 5 and 6 mean. Edit: You answered while I was posting.
TheDeuce Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Any platform that discusses reparations should never be considered, IMO. I've always hated the argument of reparations, but one sentence discredits the entire thing? Tough crowd...

I like a couple of the basic proposals at the end of that (I'll listen to reparations proposals and we really need to address the way the war on drugs is working) and have a couple that I'd like to add that I think would help: 1) Complete overhaul of state and federal banking regulations to encourage a return to community banks rather than the massive consolidation we've seen in the last 30 years. That should make it easier for black-owned small businesses and sole proprietorships to borrow the necessary funds to start and continue business operations in neighborhoods where such things have been dead for decades. 2) Reforms to local, state, and federal business regulations to make it easier for small businesses and local proprietorships to operate outside the burdensome load of over-regulation that favors massive corporations at the expense of smaller entities. 3) An end to privately-run prisons. The fact that certain groups and people have an economic interest in making sure other people remain in prison is completely insane in a free society. I worry about big government and overspending in a lot of sectors as much as the next guy, but private prisons should be a non-starter. In fact, the whole way the justice system finances itself needs serious examination.

Good post.

TexasRanger Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 1. Stop arresting black people via traffic stops, minor drug bust ect ect. 2. Provide a payment to all black people due to slavery an in justices from the past. 3. Make banks provide money to invest in black only communities. 4.make openings in companies to insure the work force is represented by the blacks living in the community. 5. Create black court systems and police forces to see over the community. 6.create black only positons thru out the current society. I've thought they needed to do this to make it a legitimate group for a long time. I had hoped it would be a little bit more moderate but hey its a start.

You can't stop arresting people who are breaking the law. This should say "stop profiling black people." 2. Disagree completely with this. 3. Getslow touched on an option for this. 4. While this will help, black people still have to apply for said jobs. 5. Black people should be encouraged to join the police force, go to school for criminal justice and law. Just creating these things because doesn't seem right to me. 6. Disagree with this.
