Science Friction Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 Let me preface this by saying that this is not to be a funny topic. I don't find it funny at all, and I certainly don't find mental illness to be funny. My dad has worked in the field for over forty-five years, has been threatened at gunpoint, dealt with suicidal patients, paranoid schizophrenics, sociopaths, psychopaths, every abnormal behavior you can think of. In a conversation the other night, dad asked me if I thought that Mr. Trump was "well." At first, I didn't get what he meant. Then he added that he's talking about his mental well-being. He thinks there is something amiss with his mind. It's something I have thought a lot about since. The last couple of days, I've read quite a bit online about what a number of medical professionals and trained mental health professionals(therapists, psychologists etc..) have commented. I'm not terribly concerned because I think there is little chance that he can win. However, if I thought he had a real chance of being elected, I would be quite concerned. Candidate's Trump is extremely erratic, sometimes bordering on downright bizarre. He seems to have no real empathy for people, seems almost to enjoy insulting certain groups, and he absolutely will not and, I believe, cannot apologize for anything he says or does, even when it's obvious he has offended or hurt someone. I am not in the mental health field and so I have absolutely no idea if his mental faculties are failing him. It does seem that he shows signs of narcissism and possibly even sociopathic behaviors. At the very least, there is some kind of personality disorder going on. I must be honest here, though I know I will get a lot of disagreement from all sides. No hyperbole intended here. I would feel more comfortable with John W. Hinckley taking a tour of the White House than I would Donald J. Trump living there for four years. Please offer up your opinions on the state of Candidate Trump's mental well-being. Do you think there is a problem? Please, I beg of you, NO HRC in this topic! This is not about her. Let's please keep the discussion on Mr Trump. If you want to talk about Hillary, start another topic. Thank you in advance for adding to what I hope will be an earnest discussion of what I believe has become a relevant topic.
Twotoplace Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Trump's lack of knowledge -- on world affairs, for instance -- bother me as much as what you outlined, SF. Yes, I agree with the assessment that something appears to be "amiss with his mind." Just the other day I was thinking that if Trump is elected president, how many state dinners would he be holding for heads of state from other countries? The answer might be zero. If you were the president of Mexico, for instance, why would you travel to D.C. to be insulted by an unstable person?
B-Ball-fan Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 I don't recall exactly when I first heard of Donald Trump, but from the very beginning I found him to be awfully odd, and his off putting personality has always made me cringe. He's certainly a one of a kind man, but his bombastic and entitled behavior can't simply be attributed to being wealthy, though his power trip undoubtedly has something to do with it. There are many very wealthy people with calm reserved natures. Megalomaniac is without a doubt a word that describes him to the core, and an attention seeker of the highest order. Part of me has wondered if him running for president has merely been a game to him to see just how far he can take his power and celebrity. Perhaps he's even a genius beyond our comprehension whose goal has been to shake up a system that many ordinary people might agree needed some shaking up. Even if it wasn't his intent, as a result he very well could have a dramatic effect on the future of American politics. My hunch is that he's not that terribly intelligent, and is getting a massive kick in seeing just how powerful he can be, and with him being so anti-politically correct, and too rich to be bought by anyone, he doesn't feel that he has anything to lose, or owes anyone in particular any respect.
lawildcat Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Somebody stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night....

Really agree a lot with this assessment.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Really agree a lot with this assessment. Perhaps he just doesn't care, but to go around regularly insulting people like it ain't no thing it would seem that he's also a little delusional not to be concerned about his mortality. I mean would it really be a surprise to anyone if they woke up to the news that he once and for all ticked off the wrong person?
Jesse James Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Now if a couple of other posters would give their opinions this one would be complete.
B-Ball-fan Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Now if a couple of other posters would give their opinions this one would be complete. I was just kidding with all that I said. Donald Trump is probably one of the most diplomatic, intelligent, thoughtful, humble, regular everyday down to earth nice guys that I have ever seen. It's puzzling that anyone would think otherwise. He takes so much heat, and frankly I just can't see why. :idunno:
hidinout Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Quite possibly could be a hall of fame level post .
mcpapa Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Now if a couple of other posters would give their opinions this one would be complete. Same here. But they haven't weighed in yet.:lol2:
hidinout Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Luckily we have stable folk like Nancy Pelosi to guide our fine federal govt.

Well, it took longer than I thought, and to be fair you didn't get HRC; but maybe the next best thing.
Science Friction Posted August 2, 2016 Author Posted August 2, 2016 A pretty fair assessment of the mind of the Donald(with some historical context) by psychologist, Dan P. McAdams. A Psychologist Analyzes Donald Trump’s Personality - The Atlantic
hidinout Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 I'd equate the topic to those that thought Obama was born in Syria and is secretly a Muslim.
