Public Schools: Tuition and Scholarships

Featured Replies

Without naming specific names, I have heard what would best be quantified as "whispers of rumors" of a specific public school that has been offering free tuition to students if they agree to transfer schools and do not want to move.

This thread is not intended to try to figure out who the school in question is, but rather to simply discuss the focal topic at hand.

1. Can a public school in Kentucky offer any sort of financial aid to offset tuition?

2. Does it make a difference whether the school is Independent or a County School?

3. If financial aid is allowed, under any circumstance can it be associated with volunteering, fund raising, or athletics?

I am far from an expert on these topics but very curious to learn from those that are.

The answer to #3 is no.

I would say if true and can be proven about a school in KY, that school is in hot water.

No, to all of those...

"Does it make a difference whether the school is Independent or a County School?" -These two operate exactly the same except that one is in the middle of another's district. One can't do anything the other doesn't.

Just wanted someone to make that exact point

Can you rephrase that last sentence? The double negative is throwing it off. I'm not trying to be the grammar police because I suck at grammar. I've read it 5 or 6 times at least and I'm still seconding guessing myself. I would hate for your point to be misunderstood.

I think people WAY OVERESTIMATE how much high schools and Public School Districts care about sports....

I feel like it says what I meant but here is another swipe at it.

One can not do anything, the other is not also allowed to do...

Or,

Somerset as an Independent can not do anything that Pulaski County (as a county school) can not also do.

If you don't like those feel free to rephrase it.

Should we move this to the Paintsville thread?

@Jumper_Dad

Why is that? Don't both have their own school boards? So if Pulaski Co school systems decides they don't want to do something then Somerset has to follow suit? That doesn't make sense to me. That would mean Walton or Beachwood would have to follow along with all decisions made by Boone Co of Highlands having to follow Campbell Co. I understand if you are referring to something like Collins having to do follow Shelby Co but those are two schools within the same school district and governed by the same school board.

NO! it is that the rules are the same for both.

My point was that many on here seem to think that Independent Schools have some sort of an advantage, that County Schools don't have...they play on the exact same level playing field.

I think I heard this right from an administrator about a KY public school system.... They reduced tuition for students to transfer in with higher test scores. The rationale being that getting those kids in your school gives you a better school.

OK then why is tuition not the same for all schools and if each school district sets its own tuition then why couldn't they lower it for financial need?

I can't talk about the public side of things, but I know that at Trinity an independent third-party assesses the family's financials and financial aid is given based on the family's 'demonstrated need'. The third-party must be (and is) one approved by the KHSAA and the maximum assistance a student could receive is 61.5%.

Also, Trinity does not offer any sport scholarships, only rewarding academic performance on the placement test. Even so, those scholarships are less than the 25% scholarship maximum enforced by the KHSAA.
