June 27, 201610 yr A tragic split | The Economist This is the key quote for me: Populist anger toward elites and experts is the key variable and it's true across borders and oceans. People will reason and rationalize why these events are occurring, but there's no explaining them without understanding this variable. Great post. I agree 100%.
June 27, 201610 yr It probably has hurt all our retirement funds, BUT most of these countries are just that, Individual countries. The EU has taken that away from the people and nobody likes being told what to do by someone in Brussels Belgium. I dont think 8 will leave , but its not good that some are already calling for a vote.
June 27, 201610 yr I moved 90% of my retirement to money market funds last week. I'll buy back into stock funds when the dust clears. Dow was 17,902 when I got out.

June 28, 201610 yr Looks like they got out just in time: Has Britain avoided a ‘European superstate’? | Daily Mail Online From the article: Plans for 'a closer European Union' have been branded an attempt to create a 'European superstate'. Germany's foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his French counterpart Jean-Marc Ayrault today presented a proposal for closer EU integration based on three key areas - internal and external security, the migrant crisis, and economic cooperation. But the plans have been described as an 'ultimatum' in Poland, with claims it would mean countries transfer their armies, economic systems and border controls to the EU.

My problem with some of these articles is their painting of it as irrational anger. Some can be irrational but they root of them anger stems from real issues.

Anyone who sells on short term flucations better have a crystal ball of when to get back in or a CFA. Because most people on this board hurt themselves more when they sell in a down market.
June 28, 201610 yr Anyone who sells on short term flucations better have a crystal ball of when to get back in or a CFA. Because most people on this board hurt themselves more when they sell in a down market. Short selling and risk aversion are two different things. I'm not trying to make money off a down market. I'm holding my money where it is until things stabilize. As of right now, almost everyone has lost 5%. I've lost nothing. If they said, "April Fools" and it came back up today, I buy back in, and I've lost nothing. When the China thing happened. I got out. I got out when the DOW was 17,300. It bottomed out around 15,900 and I got back in on the way up at 16,400. When it got back to 17,300, everyone was even. I was up 5%. I've done this a bunch. Anytime the world economy, or our economy gets disrupted, I get out. I do it a lot. It's called risk aversion. If this thing drops the Dow into the low 16's. Everyone will lose around 12%. I, however, will still be even, and will be in a position to generate a nice return as it goes back up.

What I can say is the average person on this board or American is not. Even missing 2 or 3 days historically can cost the average American .
June 29, 201610 yr Before the terrorist attack, I would have guessed the market would be back to where it was before Brexit by Friday. Now, I am not sure.
June 30, 201610 yr Before the terrorist attack, I would have guessed the market would be back to where it was before Brexit by Friday. Now, I am not sure. It is pretty much back to where it was by Thursday...not Friday...

When do you decide to get back in the market. I think I heard it was at a record high today. This was a short term blip, but if the market steadily drops and you are still contributing, you are dollar cost averaging the down market.

I got back in after 2 up days at around 17,600.
