Former Buckeye Shot and Killed

RIP Big Willie Style, will never forget your 2002 title game.

Lots of investigating needs to be done:

Regardless of why Cardell Hayes shot and killed former Saints defensive end Will Smith, the fact remains that Hayes apparently did it. The motive may be a little murkier than first believed.

Dubbed an incident of road rage at first, the New Orleans Advocate points out that Hayes sued the City of New Orleans in 2005 after police officers killed his father. Shortly before the automobile accident that resulted in Hayes shooting Smith and his wife, Smith and former Saints teammate Pierre Thomas had eaten dinner with Billy Ceravolo, one of the officers who shot Anthony Hayes and who was personally sued by Cardell Hayes.

Per the Advocate, Ceravolo described Smith and Thomas as personal friends. However, Ceravolo was not at the scene of the shooting. Ceravolo also claimed he wasn’t aware that Cardell Hayes had named Ceravolo in the lawsuit, which was settled in 2011 for what Hayes’ lawyer called a “large” amount of money.

If Cardell Hayes were merely seeking retribution, common sense suggests he would have simply shot Ceravolo. Then again, the mind of a person capable of killing another person isn’t always awash in rational thought. For now, the point is that either the incident of road rage carried with it a strange and bizarre coincidence, or that there really was no coincidence.

Will Smith murder was not road rage? | ProFootballTalk

Interesting twist with @theguru 's post.

I was just thinking his defense would be "a testosterone filled 6'2" 270 pound man going bat :poop: crazy came after me and I feared for my life so I defended myself with a gun?"

I am curious as to why the shooter was driving a hummer? Seems to me that there is more to this story. The alleged shooter called 911 and waited for the police to arrive. But how can he claim self defense if smith was shot in the back and the shooter also shot his wife?

Can it just be coincidence? Hard to believe for sure.

Good Lord folks have become ridiculous. Tragic event which I'd like to think could have been easily avoided.

Smith has excelled off and on the field....and will be missed tremendously by the Saints community!

Witness says Smith told shooter that he, too, had a gun.

This is exactly why he can still claim self-defense, IMO. He can claim that Smith was going back to his car to get his gun, and will a very limited means of protecting himself, he shot and killed Smith.

It will be interesting. Is someone claiming they had a gun without one actually seeing the gun justification for self-defense?

It would depend on the totality of the situation, I would think. If he claims to have a gun, looks as if he is going to his car where he said that the gun was, my car is busted and can't move, and I'm not going to be able to outrun his bullets, it may justify his actions. HOWEVER, I don't know how putting himself in that situation by crashing into Smith prior to the altercation as apparent retribution for his hit and run will impact that claim. Additionally, he pulled his gun first. I'd say that this, from what we know right now, looks more like murder than it does self defense.

I believe more of this story will continue to be leaked out. Was a gun found on Smith or in his vehicle?

Police would not comment.
