Just want to know your thoughts. As you know there isn't much spring weather. With the wind and cold, should baseball be being played right now? Ecspecially with young pitchers' arms having a greater chance of being hurt.

I feel below 40, especially with the windy conditions most have seen in the last several weeks is too cold for baseball. It is no fun for anyone, teams or fans and I think it increases the chance of injuries to arms and legs. Too bad high school baseball can't be a fall sport played at the start of the school year. August, Sept and Oct would be great . Summer ball is over and most fall ball leagues are not that great unless you are playing for a high level traveling team, but I guess football doesn't want to take a chance of losing players or revenue.

Highs will be in the 60's and 70's next week.

I was asked to play softball today...no thanks. "Frostbite" is not on my list of things to do.

There are still games being played today.

Kinda have to laugh, we argue every year the season starts to early because of the weather, yet here we are in the middle of April and is winter weather.

To minimize injury and to help middle-aged hind ends such as mine from freezing to metal bleachers I say thank you to those who choose to cancel games when temps hit sub 40 degrees...

 

So baseball and softball players & fans are somehow bigger wimps than the football/soccer players & fans?

Those games get played in much worse weather than any of this!

I have to agree with Bullybird. Why dont we talk about quarterbacks arms getting hurt or soccer player pulling muscles. I would think the kids who are playing now in the spring are more acclimated to the conditions anyway since practice started in Feb when its even colder. Unless of course the coaches are always going indoors for their workouts. Dont forget all the college teams start games Feb 15th. so if your kid wants to play at the next level, he will need to get used to it now.'Unless of course he is going to Florida or the likes(unlikely)

We don't talk about soccer because there is no throwing in soccer. QB's are the only guys that throw in football, and typically they don't throw nearly as much, and not at full effort like a pitcher. Throwing a baseball is an unnatural motion, and cold muscles and tendons are more susceptible to injury. And unlike other sports, all players may have to throw at full effort at any given time.

 

As far as college teams starting in February, they absolutely do. However, the northern teams typically start their seasons traveling to warmer climates on weekends. Lower level D1 and D2&3 northern teams usually don't start playing games until mid March.

In football and soccer you are constantly moving. In baseball you're standing and not moving most of the time and can't stay warm.

Great post... Agree 100%. It is much more difficult to play baseball in colder and wet weather than other sports...

 

Why do people think baseball has rainouts? You can't grip the ball, you can't see the ball very well, you can't get your footing...

If the field is too wet, the ball won't even roll or bounce...

 

Football can effectively be played on cold, wet days... Baseball absolutely cannot.

I know for sure golfers didn't come out to play yesterday. I worked the desk at our club all day and didn't have a single golfer. Normally April weekends are big days for our course. Everyone is usually gung-ho for golf in the spring.
