We don't talk about soccer because there is no throwing in soccer. QB's are the only guys that throw in football, and typically they don't throw nearly as much, and not at full effort like a pitcher. Throwing a baseball is an unnatural motion, and cold muscles and tendons are more susceptible to injury. And unlike other sports, all players may have to throw at full effort at any given time.

As far as college teams starting in February, they absolutely do. However, the northern teams typically start their seasons traveling to warmer climates on weekends. Lower level D1 and D2&3 northern teams usually don't start playing games until mid March.

I will gladly disagree. Not once did my collegiate season start in March. Second weekend in February every season at the D2 level. *EDIT* didn't see the northern part thrown in there. My bad on that one.

I think it's more uncomfortable for the fans than the players. If the pitchers warm up properly, I don't see a problem. Besides it saves on ice after the game!

I voted yes. I had a fire in my fireplace last night. Would have been burning all week if I had been in town.

Iowa STARTS their regular season Memorial Day weekend. State tourney ends last July/early August.

Does Iowa have the year round school year with several 2 week breaks ?

Good question but my guess is no.

Play ball! Today it is warm enough!

Probably still too wet.

Get out the gas and the helicopters!

I'd love nothing more than for than to see the start of the season backed up until April 1st.

With that said, I'd also love to see the start of the high school football season also backed up until Labor Day weekend, or even the week after like the NFL does --with practice not starting until August 1st (but, that's all for another topic).

Back basketball up a week or two, also. I love it as much as the next man, but it's always 70 degrees and sunny in the gym.

ALL A Thread:

Are all the 9th region teams okay with having it at Florence Freedom? Heard some people/coaches say they don't like the turf for safety reason.

I've heard coaches say it's like playing on carpet with cement and kids are afraid to slide

I'm getting confused... Is it too cold or too hard?

Do we need bigger "safe zones" too? Like the ones that are all the rage on college campuses?

I've been on the field. I've never noticed it being "hard."

I've been on the Freedom field for over 200 games, roughly 70 of those games have been since they put turf down. I've never noticed it being too hard or carpet like. If kids are afraid to slide, it's because they don't want to get turf burn. Those same kids are probably the ones that don't want to slide on dirt either for fear of being scratched up.
