Was it ever in writing that it was a non-cut sport?

Have no idea, but was told that by previous head coach. Maybe he didn't know what he was doing. We went down this road one other time with Duffy. Isn't Weinrich a student of the coach that tore the program apart before? Maybe not. But this bit of info that was shared over the weekend isn't anything new. I was told this last summer as Highlands prepared for the upcoming season. Something about Weinrich wanting to cut numbers. Tired of babysitting. Something to that extent.

We played with what, 67ish players and we had about 30-35 that played. The others were under the direction of some very competent assistant coaches. And I think we only had like 7 coaches total. Those assistants took care of the extra kids that just wanted to be part of the program. I see nothing wrong with that. Weinrich just needs assistants that want to do that particular job if it's a bother to him. There are plenty around. But quantity isn't always better than quality. Wait! That's this whole argument isn't it? Hahaha! Oh well. Coach Weinrich's the boss so what he says goes!

Seriously, why all the talk about cutting kids at this time. Did HHS lay off some assistant coaches? Are they expecting a bigger turn out for the team than the previous years. What's up? It couldn't be travel expenses, most of the regular season is with local teams.

I'm sure that coach W is more like Dale than Duffy.

The so called extra kids that just want to be part of the program, are the ones getting their brains beat in everyday at practice by the starters. They do the same training as the starters do on the field while thy are doing conditioning drills. Some kids are just better players, that's life. I wasn't a starter, but I sure thought that I earned a place on the team even if it was just paying on special teams. If Duffy was my coach, I would have been cut, not because of my effort, but because of my lack of talent. So be it.

I hardly think Duffy cut kids because of lack of talent. He was looking for kids who would put up with his crazy ways. If you lacked talent but didnt mind doing 100 bear crawls in 80 degree heat with no water I think you got a uniform, maybe didnt play but stood on the sideline.

Really unfortunate if Highlands cuts kids who "aren't good enough." They know they aren't good enough to play but some kids just want to be apart of a team. It's often the non superstars who go the extra mile to attend all practices and the non superstars, who end up showing up every day for work and for their families.

The few times I was at a football clinic with Dale, he sure seemed to embrace the lets judge the kids in 20 years, vs the back to back state titles.

I hope we learn more about what is going on.

That works until a few of those extra kids decides (because hey they're not playing so what will it hurt) to put some pee in the microwave and then its a situation that has to be dealt with, if those kids were not their, less you have to worry about.

What are you talking about? Really should get a life my friend!

No one is getting cut. This is like a game of telephone. I know there is not a lot to talk about this time of year, but there is nothing to see here.

You need to go watch a Highlands practice. No one is "getting their brains beat in everyday at practice by the starters." My son will graduate this year after playing four years. Highlands does not generally hit, much less abuse non-starters. Starters almost always go against each other. I understand your use of hyperbole to make a point, but this is just inaccurate.

Believe it or not, 40 something years ago I was getting my brains beat in at practice. Two a day practices in August with no water breaks, and all the salt tablets you could eat. My, how times have changed. I was not a starter and I promise you that I was the one being abused at practice, by the bigger, faster, better player. Highlands didn't start practicing starters on starters until Dale implemented the platoon system, until then they didn't have the numbers or talent to do that. I think Dale started the platoon system around 08 or 09,when Collinsworth, Bardo and Roller were starting as Sophomores.

How many practices did you watch in the early 70's?

I haven't seen a Highlands practice in quite a while, may stop by this year and see what has changed. :thumb:

I highly doubt there is a lot of hitting in practices which IMO is smart. Head injuries are on every parent's mind as well as coaches. Teach technique in practice and save the blows for gametime.

With that said I think there was some rumblings on BGP either last year or year before where kids had their helmets off on the sidelines and asking parents to bring them hotdogs. I may be wrong but maybe weeding those kids out is where this whol "Cutting kids" started.

Maybe that is what is missing? I know when SK played Highlands. Highlands was not very phyiscal actually they was fragile. A lot of kids came out of that game banged up.

Again remember 18 game limit to non varsity games. This counts freshman and JV games.

Each level is allowed 10 games. There is no combo limit.

Play more JV games, split the jv in to two teams? Hate to see kids who want to participate not get the chance too.

I've always heard scheduling jv games is tough. It be really hard to schedule two different jv teams.
