"Just Say No" : How Nancy Reagan Helped America Lose the War on Drugs

Featured Replies

I love when people attack Reagan with half truths and without creating or stating the entire picture.

But we all know why Trump has risen because most the candidates on the right fear standing up to the crazy angry left that has risen in recent years.

Reagan was never afraid to mock opposing viewpoints and built his entire career on it both within the GOP and attacking democrats.

People forget how Reagan was considered a crazy outsider for years within the party. Like Ted Cruz or a Rand Paul. But over time won a majority of this country over by sticking to his principles and attacking opposing viewpoints .

That candidate that Ronald Reagan wins in a landslide again today. Reagan did something that no politician today can do. He convinced people who disagreed with him that they were wrong.

That Skill set wins in any era.

That doesn't address anything I said. But, I did almost choke on some water at the line about "most the candidates on the right fear standing up to the crazy angry left." I am now certain we live in alternate universes because obstructing Obama and demonizing anything approaching moderation as being what the "Lefties" want has defined the GOP for the last eight years.

I don't know the answers to the drug problems. Some say if the laws are too harsh all it accomplishes is filling up jails and prisons. And that's probably true. But what is to be done with drug dealers? Or addicts who burglarize vehicles, homes, and businesses to feed their habits?

IMO rehab is only marginally effective. In my county I've seen a few people come back from rehab and stay clean, but very few. Most go right back to their old habits. Actually, I've seen more success from addicts being sent away to prison for a few years coming back and staying sober. The rehab programs just don't get it done in my opinion. Maybe we need facilities built that have a prison structure and also serve as a rehab service, a place for drug related crimes only.

I suppose what I'm saying is if you simply go soft on drug crimes with a slap on the wrist, with a little rehab thrown in, that's not going to work either.

Ah the joy it must be to ignore what Harry Reid did as leader of the Senate and being the biggest obstructionist of modern times. Maybe also ignoring a president who never passed a spending bill. I don't know maybe ignoring what side of the isle is leading these angry destructive protests across our country over the last few years leading to destruction or property , lawlessness and an attacking on basic rights Americans hold dear.

For the record I to spit out my water because you tried to paint a picture of Obama ever being willing to negotiate with Republicans or come off with moderate solutions. That in and of itself is a comical statement .

You said the candidates of the right have been afraid of standing up to the left. I said that's exactly what they've been doing, to a fault. You respond with a bunch of things you don't like about liberals and Democrats and claim I'm ignoring it. How does that make any sense? Conservative candidates have been afraid to stand up to the left and your proof is that Obama can't get a formal budget through Congress?

I was referring to presidential candidates such as McCain and Romney.

Obviously the Rand Paul's and Ted Cruz's of the world have been fighting back since in office.

Actually he skillfully played the political game by giving the Democrats some of what they wanted and Reagan got the military built up he wanted. They never admitted they were wrong. But then neither did Ronnie.

Remember it was under Reagan that the US sent troops to Beirut and had troops die there. The result was he pulled them out.

He empowered North and the cronies to work back channel deals with terrorists to get what he wanted but also gave them what they wanted.

Reagan was probably the greatest president in my lifetime IMO. But he wasn't perfect.

In one respect, I'm the Trump of BGP. There wouldn't even be a discussion about Nancy Reagan if it weren't for me. Why, it took a liberal(I think it was Mcpapa to even start a thread about the dear lady's passing. That's shameful and almost sacrilege on the part of our righty friends. :)

It could be because you talk about what obstructionists the Republicans have been the last eight years without mentioning the fact that Harry Reid and the Dems controlled the Senate for 4 of those years. He was as obstructionist as any Republican.

Never said he was perfect. My point was the characteristics that made Reagan great translate today and are being discounted when people make the claim he couldn't get elected.

Reagan the speech giver , debater , and when he was in a press conference had no equal in relaying his message.

LB, you are in mid season form in this thread regarding Reagan...keep preaching the truth!

Trying to figure out how a swipe against "Just Say No" is a slam on the right. Even hardcore rightys have to admit that the War on Drugs is a lost cause, right? I mean, gadzillions of wasted dollars …

Exactly. Spend the money on education, voluntary treatment and let natural selection work itself out. Do drugs, can't work, get treatment or can't eat and die. Addiction is a serious problem being both mental and physical. I know this sounds harsh but before you are addicted you chose to use. You have take responsibility the decision to use in the first place. That was a choice, and it sucks to be you. No victims in a crime against yourself, no sympathy either.
