"Just Say No" : How Nancy Reagan Helped America Lose the War on Drugs

Featured Replies

Nancy Reagan, a former Hollywood actress and the widow of President Ronald Reagan, died at her home in California on Sunday at age 94, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential — and controversial — first ladies in American history.

The Reagans, who were in the White House from 1981 to 1989, are often heralded as setting the conservative standard for the decades to come, embodying neoliberalism and other philosophies that modern Republican presidential candidates often invoke to attract voters. They also presided over the sharp escalation of America's war on drugs, which led to an era of tough-on-crime rhetoric and draconian policies that swelled the US prison population.

Holy Cow, when Mrs. Obama passes away, are we going to hear as much criticism about her? Is her life in the White House going to be dissected to shreds on social media. Jeez Louize, my first reaction was "I hope so" but then I thought, hell I'm getting REAL REAL tired of this crap.

I wasn't being critical. The article was. I've been reading a lot about Ms Reagan since her passing , especially on her legacy and such. I hope she will be remembered more for her work late in life with stem cell and Alzheimer's than the negative things which clouded her husband's administration. Surely, we must all agree that the "Just Say No" campaign was terribly naïve and an abject failure.

What's your point?

Ask the author. I've just been reading a lot about her and came across this piece, which I think has merit.

Another slam to anyone on the Right by SF.

If there's still BGP, and MtnRef is still here, you bet your bazookas.

Good Gosh , I wonder if there is a single ounce of decency in some people .

Trying to figure out how a swipe against "Just Say No" is a slam on the right. Even hardcore rightys have to admit that the War on Drugs is a lost cause, right? I mean, gadzillions of wasted dollars …

Poor MtnRef, the left really likes to heap it on him. Stay strong MtnRef!

Because someone other than themselves posted it. It's like family...criticism from within-acceptable; from without -not acceptable.

What? :lol2: You know I speak the truth and it's not piling on. Heck, he OWNS it!

That's fine. I'll rattle the cage. The GOP's love affair with Ronald Reagan is a fraud, considering he would have zero chance of getting elected nowadays. They keep asking for the next Ronald Reagan to unite the party, when they really don't even want him. Their votes prove this.
