Which "Mountain" School Has the Best Chance?

Featured Replies

To win a game at Rupp Arena...

13th: South Laurel vs. Christian County

14th: Buckhorn vs. Murray

15th: Lawrence County vs. Doss

16th: Elliott County vs. Bowling Green

Tough year on the draw for these regions. I think they likely go 0-4 but which team has the best chance at pulling an upset?

I think I'll go with South Laurel because they've been competitive with some high level teams this season and they have a legitimate big man. But there's no doubt that Christian County is the real deal.

Thoughts?

South Laurel. I could see them making a run, especially if they get by CC.

Lawrence County

One of my favorite things about the Sweet 16 is a meeting between two schools that almost certainly would never play each other if not for the tournament. This feels like one of those matchups. What can you tell me about LC?

They get up and down the floor, putting points up in a hurry & averaging about 80 ppg as a team. Led by the Daltons, Robert & Timmy, both of whom I'd guess to be about 6'2" or 6'3". Timmy scores about 19 a game & Robert 18 a game. Point guard is Austin Chaffin...really nice player on the perimeter. Overall, just a very athletic bunch and they are exciting to watch.

I'm sure @15th Region could give you a more thorough description of the Bulldogs.

They are a really close 2nd in my mind. And I agree, if they can get past Christian, watch out.

Have they improved at all defensively since December? My only knowledge of them really comes from the tournament at LexCath where Trinity lit them up for 90+ and even then I only read about it and wasn't at the game. A run-and-gun game would concern me against a Doss team that's put up 100+ on a few occasions this season.

I just saw them in December as well, so I can't speak to their improvement since then.

But your comment about Doss also being high-scoring is why I think this will be the most entertaining game of the entire 1st Round. I just hope Doss brings a larger contingent of fans than they did last year.

FWIW, Lawrence is 1-1 against the field. Beat NewCath & lost to Trinity.

You and me both. It's been a long time since much of anything good happened for Doss -- or the neighborhood it's located in for that matter -- and the culture around the school that works up buzz for big attendance simply isn't present. I definitely hope they can find a way to get some folks there this year.

Maybe it didn't bother the kids last year on the team, but I know I felt bad for them that they had such a small fan section.

I have no idea what Lawrence County will have in terms of fans, but my guess is that since this is their first trip, it will be a pretty large group.

Saw that game...2nd half anyway, missed the 2nd quarter where Trinity scored something like 36 points and hit like nine 3's or something crazy. I think everyone was in shock. Consider it an outlier. LC got behind by like 30, and outplayed Trinity in the 2nd half and made the score very respectable but couldn't overcome the huge 1st half/2nd quarter. LC is plenty good and has 5 very quality starters and can score from any position. Thin bench though. They can beat teams in this field.

I'll go with Buckhorn

I don't think they beat Murray, but I do think it will be a good game.

The DawgPound will be come out in droves.

Ah, the way this season has gone, I don't there's a lock anywhere.:lol2:
