I routinely get a call from "Windows Incorporated" or "Windows Security" due to an alert they had received from my computer that it was being hacked. They give me instructions that would give them remote access to my computer. First few times I'd hang up, now I try to keep them on the phone as long as possible. I make up stories or continually ask them questions anything to throw them off their game. One day the guy called and I acted out of breath and told him to call back, that I was "busy" with my wife. He said, Cool I'll call you back in a little while, I told him he should wait an hour. About an hour later, he called back :lol2:

 

I love screwing with these people.

 

Another scam is a recorded call from, "Rachel from card holder services" she says that if I want a lower interest rate on my Credit Card I should press 9.

I press 9 and I get a guy offering to lower my interest rate all I have to do is give him my credit card information and the code off of the back. Amazing thing is he can lower my rate on any card from any company :lol2:

 

Last Credit Card guy I spoke with...cursed me out after I suggested he get a real job and quit trying to scam and steal from people.

The worst scams are phishing through email. Most are pretty sloppy and easy to spot, but some are slicker and if you're not paying attention can end up clicking a link that you definitely don't want to click.

.....and NO, I didn't use my real address on the envelope.

 

Another time I told them I worked for the Secret Service, line went quickly silent, never heard from them again. :lol2:

I've seen literally hundreds of these in my line of work. I tell folks all of the time don't pay someone you've never seen. Period. I get how it can get you going especially given your circumstances but that's what they prey on.

Asking for any type of credentials usually works. Or tell them you've been investigating them and you're glad they called. That's my best so far.

Numerous complaints have been reported to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office in regards to citizens receiving phone calls from individuals stating that they are Deputies from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. The caller tells the unsuspecting people that they have an outstanding warrant for missing jury duty. In order for “the victims” to take care of the warrant, they are instructed to go to a local Kroger Store and purchase a Kroger pre-paid credit card for $1000. Upon purchasing the credit card they are further instructed to read the number on the card to the imposter, therefore giving the imposter’s access to that pre-paid purchase. Please be aware that this is a scam. It is not the practice of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office to solicit any payment for any type of business over the telephone.

Exactly what happened to me last weekend. These people are not in fear of getting caught and will continue to do this scam.

They called me back last Sunday and tried to do the scam again. My wife answered and said why are you doing this to people, we know it is a scam. She said we have reported you. The criminal said "one monkey cannot stop the show and we will continue to make millions of dollars per day".

 

I don't see how they make millions per day but they definitely had no concern or fear of law enforcement catching them.

Advances in technology like Caller ID Spoofing really embolden some tech savvy criminals.

I can't believe people fall for this kind of crap.
