Augusta 63 Mason County 61 (39th District Championship)

Featured Replies

I done some work on the history of the Mason-Augusta rivalry over the past few years. The two games this season, fouls were MC 39 A 21. FT's were MC 13-15 and A 34-44. Maddox shot 16-17 of the 44. During the Bach years for four games, MC shot 32-53 and Augusta shot 73-97 on FT's. Bach shot 55-64 by him self which is more than Mason's team shot. Anybody else see a pattern here.

Augusta knows how to get to the line and convert???

Just poking you sumo. There is a big difference in the numbers, but as we all have noticed over the years there are some calls that don't get called and there isn't much that can be done. Being a ref is a thankless job. there will always be an upset fan base.

Honestly there are probably 6 teams that could win the 10th Region this year.

I said a while back that only 3 can win it and I'm sticking with that.

Just saw the shot on ESPN! Big time moment for the small town on the river.

Was it on Sportscenter?

Was it on Sportscenter?

Yes. On the morning edition. Not sure if it will be on throughout the day.

The game is not called like this when we play Bracken. If it was, there would not be as long of a winless streak.

The game was on ESPN. I saw where Mason County students were watching ESPN at school and "The shot heard round Brooksville" was on there. We are blessed with phones to record these moments; I've seen 7 different videos/angles of it. Imagine having this technology for the Ohearn shot, which happened yesterday many years ago.

To better prove your point, pull the same stats against other local teams and out of region.

Is the Augusta games simply an outlier or is it the norm when teams play mason.

Of course all teams are not built the same. Augusta is an has been small, thus a lot more dribbling and attacking.

Hard to compare, but I love antylitics in the morning. ;)

ESPN replayed the shot twice and had an arrow pointing on Jason Snapp dancing after the game

Agree with this.

Not specific to this thread, but it grows tiring that people alway want to go straight to officiating as blame for a loss, rather than things such as, if we hadn't missed those defensive assignments, hadn't had unforced turnovers, hadn't of missed several free throws, could have adjusted better to their defensive scheme, etc, etc etc. To be clear I am not suggesting calling out players by name for these things, but rather, simply admitting that as a team had we did or not did these things, we may have won the game, but instead, they bypass them and go straight to officiating.

I did not blame officating for this loss. Mason flat gave the game away but bad shots and turnovers in crunch time. Just pointing out how the games are called. Mason never got in the bonus either half and fouls in both halfs were 7-2. Mason got five fouls to none in the first two minutes of the game including 2 on Williams. Last night FT's were not the difference even though the fouls were in favor of Augusta.

I have certainly witnessed a pattern, it's the style of defense being played and Augusta would not have played Mason last night if Bracken had converted free throws on Tuesday night.

Based on the stat reports on KHSAA site, it looks like Mason gets out-attempted at the line most nights. i mean, there is an overtime, nine-point win against Montgomery where they had only 9 FTAs. How is that possible?

Because they foul more ?

Because they foul more ?

right......AND, they don't always do a good job of making the other team foul them. They do attempt around 18 FTAs per game, which isnt bad, although that doesnt take into account the pace of the game/number of possessions, etc.

My point was...it seems like the FTA stat/differentiation was consistent with a lot of their season. If you win an overtime game by 9 points, you would think you would have to hit a handful of FTs to ice the game...but according to the stats they reported, they went 9/9 for the entire game.

Let me mention that Augusta is six deep and they are all short ball handling guards. They are smart, experienced and very much know their limitations. They know they cannot get in foul trouble and don't try to make the spectacular defensive plays that the more athletic, taller Mason Co. Team can afford to try because they are so deep. Fouls had minimal impact last night, with the exception of D. Williams in 1st half, however his 6'8" replacement played pretty strong, and the 13 point 4th qtr lead with less than 3 minutes to go had all Royals on deck.
