Though their early stuff was great, it indeed was poppy, but once they spread their songwriting wings they evolved well past... "She Loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah" kinda stuff.

 

Are you sure that you're not comparing their early work with stuff like Zeppelin, because a few short years brought a world of difference in the sound from the mid 60's to the late 60's?

 

How do you not include their full body of work? I can't separate the two.

When Zeppelin came into the picture, the Beatles' material by that time had evolved and matured into stuff that was way different than Yeah Yeah Yeah. There was a definite separation between their earlier material, and the type of stuff that they were eventually writing.

The Rolling Stones made "Their Satanic Majesties Request" as an attempt to copy/respond to the Beatles' "Sgt Peppers." If you listen to both and think that mess from the Stones was better then you're on something (or on the wrong thing, as the case may be :lol2:).

I have a Brit friend who was 20 in 1964 and really loved early Beatles and was caught up in the initial craze that surrounded them.

 

Within a couple of years when they started to spread their songwriting wings, he wasn't ready for the change, and all these years until I recently made him revisit their brilliant ahead of their time tunes, he thought that he didn't dig anything past their early stuff, and was amazed to realize so many years later just how good a large portion of their stuff is.

 

He had originally got caught up, like so many can, when they want their favorite band to keep repeating the same album over and over so they as a fan can stay put right there in their bliss of enjoying them, and don't want to be challenged to see them evolve.

 

Tons of stuff that I had him listen to made him realize that he was actually more familiar with it than he had realized, but when it was new he never gave it much attention. Some actually was completely brand new to his ears but his modern brain today could dig it, whereas years he wasn't ready for it.

 

He, like a lot of people, just wrote them off as hippies when they grew their hair and beards, and started taking drugs, and could no longer identify with them. He let the image that he couldn't relate to make him write them off too soon, and in hindsight he can now see the brilliance of their material that he had long ago disregarded.

The highly acclaimed group I never liked, and still don't, is The Who. I hear friends who are very knowledgeable on music speak reverently about them and I don't know if there is one song of theirs that I care for

I can feel what you're saying here to some degree. I had many years ago found myself feeling rather bored with some of their stuff. Songs like "Won't Get Fooled Again" comes to mind when I think of tunes that I just couldn't bring myself to care about or feel moved by. With that said, I can't throw the baby out with the bath water because when they did actually nail a great sound, they really did nail it.

The most important thing about the Beatles that can't be overlooked... They're possibly the most influential band in the history of rock and roll... Song structure, recording studio techniques, the first "all 4 members" are stars type of group, writing their own songs, multiple lead vocalists, movies, merchandising... Etc etc...

 

They're like most artists, they changed as they matured and also, the bigger they got, the more they could afford to experiment...

 

You don't have other majorly influential bands coming up if it weren't for the Beatles... No bands like KISS, the Eagles, Nirvana, etc...

 

Even if you don't like those bands... You can't deny that tons of bands we all love, would not be here without their influence.

I'm with you. I'm not a fan either. I've listened to everything they've ever made. It's ok. I'd much rather spend my time listening to other stuff. I think that's the point of the thread, isn't it?
