University Requiring All Freshmen to Wear FitBits

Featured Replies

They already have similar products for car insurance.

I worked some in that industry, it started about 15 years ago.

I can see the world going to a real time risk behavior cost basis for all insurance. If you let them lowjack you, and you act right, you can save money.

Living experiments.

Wouldn't 5K steps break down to about 3-4 miles? What happens to the person laid up for a week with the gout? I been there. Do they get an F on their quiz?

No, my numbers are way off. I've got 2.72 today on 7,400 steps.

The only fitbit's that have a built in GPS are the two high-end models, the Blaze and the Surge.

I think only the surge has it built in. The blaze uses your phones gps somehow.

10K is so easy.

If the fitbit or whatever its called is submitting heartbeat counts and other medically measured items, then there is a privacy issue here.

I don't think I agree with a university requiring the use of Fitbits. But with that said, I'm more worried about why my Charge HR won't sync properly or show the correct time.

I have a "fat" gene and a disease called obesity, so do they spot me a couple thousand steps 'cause its too hard for me to do this?

I remember how my fitness was tracked in my college Phys Ed class, we had to time ourselves in 6 laps around the track (1.5 miles) at the beginning of the semester and again at the end of the semester. Big difference. Prof knew who had been working and who had not.

Now to address the issue...

This is Oral Roberts Univ and they promote healthy mind, body, and soul. In fact, they probably have a policy that you sign before you enroll that has you agree to a certain lifestyle that is consistent with the school's values--things like alcohol and drug use, certain moral issues, etc. In this way, a person doesn't have to be a Christian to go there but they have to agree to uphold the lifestyle code. Nothing wrong with that. They hold people accountable to the agreement: for the mind they give grades. For the soul they count absences from chapel and maybe some other things, like whether you are a part of a small group, a service team, etc. So now for the body, they are keeping track of exercise. I don't agree with the way they track it, but in principle, the fact they require the exercise is not a problem to me.

I suppose we could argue the best way to do it (I certainly don't like the invasion of privacy that some have mentioned), but it's their school and their standards.

Is the issue for most of you the manner in which it is being tracked or the fact that they are requiring exercise of their students?
