February 3, 201610 yr This article here describes at a high level Bevin's proposed cuts for education spending, supposedly to remedy the short fall in retirement funds. Kentucky schools face funding cuts despite being priority in Gov. Bevin?s budget | Lexington Herald-Leader The article does not mention athletics, but it is hard for me to fathom that cuts to the programs mentioned in this article, would come before athletic funding. Anyone?
February 3, 201610 yr They can't be given much less than what they have to work with already which isn't much. Most schools athletic programs are trying to become self sufficient as is; through gate receipts and fundraising. Coaching stipends don't come from those, but they aren't going to be gaining any ground by cutting those back more than what they are already.
February 3, 201610 yr There's going to be a fair amount of fallout from the 9 percent cutback order. High school athletics is just one example. Some state workers are going to lose their jobs.
February 3, 201610 yr This will have minimal affect on athletics, except maybe # of coaches. Very little General Fund is used in most districts for athletics. The programs cut are outside of the SEEK General Funds districts get. No public schools/districts get funds from KDE earmarked for athletics. I do not seeing it having a noticeable impact there.

This is going to impact those districts that have not handled their money well over the years the most.

Here's hoping the effect is felt at the state department of education instead of in the classrooms and on the athletic fields. I'm sure there is wasted money in the school districts, but Lord knows there is a good bit of fat that needs trimmed in Frankfort.
February 3, 201610 yr This is going to impact those districts that have not handled their money well over the years the most. I doubt it. Only coaches salaries come from SEEK and that isn't being cut. Nothing in athletics comes outside of SEEK, through programs. It might impact if districts decide to keep Preschool over athletics. Don't see it happening. Too much funding to make up in Preschool.

Do the math, major hit.
February 3, 201610 yr The sports that cant support themselves should have season cut and maybe drop. Some sports that cant or usually dont pay for themselves are soccer, volleyball, track, tennis, This being due to high cost of travel and referees and low turnout for games
February 3, 201610 yr Personnel costs at KDE is right at 9M. Being cut to 7M+. Do the math, major hit. I've known a few folks who have left for KDE. Will be curious to see how many retire and how many filter back down to the districts in search of administrative or (gasp) teaching positions.

I was talking overall not athletics, should have pointed that out.
February 3, 201610 yr Before schools start cutting, they need to remember Title IX. Just saying. And no, I have no daughters.
February 3, 201610 yr A lot of the non revenue sports are already at bare bones. No busses being used to transport kids for track and field or tennis. Kids drive or parents take them. You pay a fee to the school to participate.
