I was there and I'm off the opinion that Wayne got some help from the officials down the stretch. Hoptown was full court pressuring Wayne and officials were anticipating fouls and calling them when they weren't happening. CJ Henagan made a heck of a hustle play to deflect an inbounds off of Wayne when it was a 1 point game. Should have been Hoptown ball. Instead, Henagan gets the foul and Wayne goes to the line. Overall, the officiating was solid but the last quarter was questionable at best.

 

Pretty good game overall. Hoptown got to the rim with ease a lot, just missed about 40 layups.

 

Good win for the 12th region.

 

I disagree about the call you mentioned. I thought Henegan went through Blevins to force him out of bounds. Both players ended up out of bounds, and it looked like enough contact to me for the call.

I agree with you. Hoptown could have been called for many more fouls,holding players when Wayne would try to inbound. I don't understand how you can't put your hands on players when ball is in play but you can wrap them up and hold when inbounding the ball.

Bottom line is that Wayne won the game. Had Hoptown made their layups or gotten a couple more jumpers to fall, they probably win.

 

Quality win for Wayne. Especially after losing less than 24 hours earlier.

The other regions allow a whole lot more hand checking and wrestling in the paint. When teams come into the 12th Region to play those are fouls. Some teams adjust, some teams don't. What I find interesting is that 12th Region teams adjust to out of region referees a lot better than teams adjust to coming into 12th Region.

This is true. One of my good friends coaches a team that played in this event and they did not like the 12th region officials at all. Said was like playing with touch fouls all game. 12th region officials call it tight, while I think most other regions call it somewhat more like the college game.

Watching Wayne county on film there was a lot of home cooking. There were a lot of cheap shots given and refs were really biased towards Wayne county, hoptown has always played good defense but not got hit with elbows after whistle blowing, one kid from got punched while he was on the ground and the ref ignored it. The wayne co. coach yelling at the refs by name when they made a call he didnt like with no technicals. Hoptown sat arguably they best player for a disagreement between him and the coach and got him out of his game.

Hoptown plays uofl style ball in the sense that they play super physical knowing that they won't get called for all of the fouls. it's simple.. the more physical you are the lower % of fouls that will get called on you. If you don't play physical, say, only foul 20 times in a game you're going to get called for 15-18 of those fouls. But if you play super physical, hand check, hold, hip check etc... foul maybe, 35 times in a game, you're only going to get called for 22-26 of those. As cal said after the game at auburn, "refs get scared to call all of the fouls in a physical game".

 

it's true and Haworth has mastered this style. When they actually get called like they're supposed to they are shocked. When they do get called it's typically against teams that are strong and can get through the contact. The game against Madison Central and Dominique Hawkins is the best example. Hoptown foolishly tried to press and play physical with Hawkins. he made them look silly. Hoptown should have won state that year if they had simply backed off and played straight up instead of pressing and trapping.

 

Hoptown fans complaining about officiating is kind of funny.

This comment by ryme32 reminds me of the posts that started last year about Coach Woods cussing the refs and opposing Coach of Taylor Co in the King of The Bluegrass. It is bogus of Coach yelling at officials. He may call them by name when they are close to the bench or stare them down across the floor, but you will not hear him yelling at them. Sometimes we as fans wish he would get vocal with them, but that is not Coach Woods.
