Fines from the Bengals/Steelers game

Featured Replies

The NFL has announced the fines for the Bengals vs Steelers Wild Card matchup and many players and coaches will be donating money to charity with a total of $83,665 in fines being announced.

Domata Peko and Wallace Gilberry were fined $8,681 each for unnecessary roughness.Adam Jones was fined $28,940 for unsportsmanlike conduct and making contact with a game official.

Steelers offensive lineman Ramon Foster was fined $17,363 for unnecessary roughness and Steelers coaches Joey Porter and Mike Munchak were each fined $10,000 for their actions in the game, all according to Ian Rapoport.

Foster's fine was for a leg whip. Gilberry was fined for his actions at the end of the game when Porter was on the field. Peko's fine came because he stepped onto the field with a jacket on and pushed a Steelers player. The Bengals received a 15-yard penalty for the action.

Nothing for Tez? Or is that part and parcel of the three games, which are certain to be appealed?

I believe so pops.

Seems like they would have been better off to fine Tez big and go with a one game suspension.

I personally thought that Mike Munchak's behavior warranted much more of a fine.

Pacman apologized today. He deserves a Grammy for his performance.

Fines mean absolutely nothing to these idiots. If the NFL really wants to corral this behavior start taking games and game checks away and I bet it will change pretty darn quick. Porter and Munchak should have been suspended for a game because their conduct to me is worse than any that took place on the field.

Also, how was Shazier not fined for his obvious hit to the head of Bernard?

Here, so you guys can see some league perspective on the hit by Shazier:

From Dean Blandino, the VP of NFL Officiating, who broke down the 3 elements of Article 8 of the NFL rule book and stated the hit was legal.

"But there are three elements to that rule. You have to line up your opponent, you have to lower your head, and you have to make forcible contact with the very top of the helmet. The key issue here is the line up. And when we're talking about angles, and he players moving at different angles, where you have Bernard is moving in this direction, Shazier is moving in this direction, then we don't have the line up."

"You're really dealing with the players moving in the same direction towards each other when this rule would apply. The theory being, when players are at different angles, they don't have as much opportunity to avoid the contact. That's where this rule does not apply"

From the source.

I'm not buying the whole "line up" interpretation. Shazier lined Bernard up from 7 yards out. He started at the 15 yard line and ran a straight line to the 22 yard line where Bernard was coming out of the backfield at the same angle in which he started. There were no cuts where any player had to react at the last second leading to a "unfortunate" hit as all the media folks are calling it.

I'm also surprised (well, maybe not) that I haven't seen the media discussing the touchdown catch either.

Sounds like back pedaling to me. If you use this logic there should never be a penalty unless the players are running directly at each other, which only happens when the offensive player tries to not avoid the defender directly in front of him, but of course then the offensive guy can lead with his helmet all day.

Line up your opponent, of course he lined him up, he hit him. From a rules perspective, I thought line up your opponent meant that you had a choice. Not lining up your opponent is, for example, you are falling down or are forced into contact from another player(blocked into).

League and officials see it differently. Considering they are the ones not only responsible for the writing, but administration of the rule, you can buy it or not.

The Source, Blandino, also said it wasn't a touchdown catch for the Steelers..... NFL is comical.

So, okay... Bernard hit was legal, but the TD for Steelers wasn't a catch.

I guess the Bernard hit wouldn't matter if the "non- TD" had been called correctly... Again, the source said it wasn't a catch... Not me. I've never once posted about that TD catch.... And I wouldn't have, except people are acting like his "weak" explanation of the Shazier hit is valid... If so, him saying the TD wasn't one should be a valid point too.

So it wasn't called on the field. It wasn't, after reviews galore, decided in super slo-mo that it was a penalty, where exactly did they backpedal from?

Yep, and it's hard to argue it's logic.

Oh, and don't forget the false start that no one has brought up on the AJ touchdown that was easy enough that Stevie Wonder would have flagged it. Really we could go on all year.
