Why not move the Saturday NFL matchups to 1:00 and 4:15, then play the CFP game at 8? Guessing that the NFL has a stranglehold on Saturday prime time.

Look at the ratings for Chiefs/Texans (4:15) compared to Bengals/Steelers (8:30). NFL isn't giving that time up.

 

I would imagine the ratings for this year's college game had more to do with the matchup than anything else. It was too regional of a matchup.

The regional nature was also complicated by the two playoff games being off about 36% so they sure didn't get any residual interest tuning in for the NC.

Agreed. Although I think a previous poster was correct when he mentioned the lack of a midwest presence in the game. Had the final been Alabama/Ohio State, or even Clemson/Ohio State, I suspect the ratings would have been larger.

I don't think either side would want to give up their "ownership" of that particular day. Also, stadium availability is a question. The teams that host wild card games aren't aware of that until a week or so ahead of time. CFP championship location is determined years in advance. If the Arizona Cardinals had hosted a playoff game last weekend, how do you adjust? At least with the game on Monday night, the NFL playoff game could be scheduled for Saturday and the stadium would have had almost 48 hours to prepare for the college game.

Last year's championship game, as good as the ratings were, still did not top the 2006 BCS game between USC and Texas.

 

Most of the BCS games drew a 17 or better rating, this years championship drew a 15.8.

 

The worst rated BCS games were Miami/Nebraska in 2002 (13.9), USC/Oklahoma in 2005 (13.7), and Alabama/LSU in

2012 (14.0).

 

From 2007 on, the BCS game was on a Monday night and at least a week after New Years Day.

Probably not, but I for one will have an adult beverage while watching the games, and let the amateurs go out for the night.
