I will be honest. The Father is the problem in this picture to me.

 

If he stays out of it, I don't think it escalates the way it did. He is not the coach nor is he an official. He is a fan in the stands and he walks up and inserts himself into the conflict. Not long after, it explodes.

 

BTW, it looked to me as the father is tackling the large referee. Maybe as Watusi said he is losing his balance but it looks like a form tackle from an older gentleman. The kick was uncalled for but in the melee the ref probably thought the old man was tackling him. The reaction of the son was made cause the son didn't see the tackle, just the kick.

 

All of them are equal to blame. Just my take.

I agree with you, he had no business on the court or interacting with officials. The combination of he and Thomas getting involved was the beginning of the end.

 

As far as the tackle/take down/fall between him and the ref, it is hard to tell really. Probably any interpretation of it will involve some speculation. Since he was pulling backwards I thought he was trying to just pull him out of the fray. My personal feelings towards him probably created my willingness to give him the benefit of the doubt. I certainly would understand anyone taking the view you have, especially in the middle of such an ugly scene.

Also to clarify this misleading title on this thread..... This was not a brawl. Just a little scuffle with very few people involved in the actual fight. Look up some video for brawls if you want to see what that really is.....

It was a sad display all the way around, a black eye for both schools, and the fallout will come. Mistakes were made and tempers flared, that much is obvious. I'm glad this video surfaced, however, because it helped me understand the reasons for some of the actions. I am ready to give Coach Varney a pass on his actions by tackling the referee. Before this video was released, he was the villian in the whole mess. After watching this and seeing it unfold, however, I can tell you that in that situation, if somebody kicked my father in the head, I have no doubt I would have reacted similarly. It may not have been the smart thing to do, and I would have had to pay the consequences, but I would have been all over that referee and I suspect most of you would have too.

Pretty much sums it up. You kick my Dad and I'm going after you, whether Dad was right or wrong. In this case the Dad was not only wrong, but the bulk of the issue.

The exact same could be said for my dad. He'd probably be mad at me in the end for trying to help him at all. :lol2:

After watching the video again, I'll say kudos to the adults that got the Phelps off the floor and/or to the locker room while this mess occurred.

Happens a lot in grade school games. Many of these guys are not certified refs.

 

There is a bigger issue, with KHSAA overseeing MS athletics now, they are supposed to be using only certified refs.

I don't think that was ever formally handed down. Tackett's stance has been more of health / safety in terms of practice dates and game numbers....he has been very clear that KHSAA is not equiped to run MS programs.

 

Explaining the different tack that will be taken with middle schools, Tackett said, "We're governing high school sports, we are overseeing this middle school project ... I hope this leads to the development of a strong middle school program."

 

Because middle school athletes have needs that are different from high school athletes, the yet-to-be-named committee members "can't just Xerox the high school rules," Tackett said.
