I've rolled these situations over in my head a thousand times and I can't understand it. How did perfectly decent, perfectly reasonable men manage to overlook or ignore what was going on right in front of them? If they didn't overlook it, what caused them to keep putting these guys in charge of parishes? Even knowing what I do about how our own legal system is set up to fail these victims, I still can't wrap my head around it.

Probably not an entirely true statement, but likely has some bearing on this matter. Reports of the moral failings of clergy, from parish priests to princes of the Church, continue to embarrass the Church and discourage the faithful, and they remind us of our obligation to pray for priests, for their sake, and for the sake of those whose lives they touch for better or for ill, the seen and the unseen.

At the end when they have he graphics telling the actual facts of what happened after the story "broke" in the Globe they had a graphic that showed every city that had a "major abuse" case. It just kept going and going and going. I actually teared up simply due to the volume of abuse.

 

This. Even after I thought they were done, there were pages and pages that kept rolling on. Brutally saddening.

I can't watch the movie being Catholic . Simple as that. Sad moment in my life as an otherwise proud Catholic. But I won't let such a small amount of people ruin it for me.

Started it late Sunday night then realized it was over 2 hours long...will wait and watch it this weekend.

I saw the movie in the theater but never posted in the thread. I'm another Catholic who was slapped in the face by reality. I think that is a good thing every once in a while. I don't have an answer, but it's literally sickening. The more I think about the many acts and the cover up, I swear my stomach starts to hurt.

 

Still, it was a really good movie and I think it deserved the awards it won. For me, it reminded me of the atrocities, but it wasn't exactly new news. I also didn't feel the movie was preachy. Probably the highest praise I can give is that I knew the entire story yet was completely engrossed the entire time. I felt like the actors that portrayed the actual "spotlight" team did a fantastic job coming across as real people.

Awesome cast. The movie was pretty good, despite the sickening material unearthed. It needed to be put "in the spotlight" though.

I think people are simply upset that he's still there at all after his involvement in the cover-up.

Which to me seems like a very fair reason to be upset.

It's a pretty extensive site with tons of information. The home page is a bit overwhelming at first glance with all of the information available, but pretty eye opening once you start digging around.

Finally got around to watching this movie last night and thought it was extremely well done. These are the types of movies that I find extremely interesting. So sad though.

 

The line that Mark Ruffalo had regarding Nazis really stuck out to me. Not comparing Catholics clergy to them by any means, but just the mentality of going along with something that isn't right.

 

My father-in-law refuses to watch it, as many of you have said. I get that, but missing out on a very good movie.

The scene where the priests admits to Rachel McAdams' character that he fooled around with boys was chilling.
