1A hard to think Painstville wasn't 1 or 2. They beat Pikeville without tailback Phelps for 2+quarters. Even in the final game without Kash Paintsville was up 17-14 in the second and it was a 4 pt ️game 12 seconds before half.

Didn't see enough 2A to know.

3A is interesting. Central/Belfry been good games. I'd be interested to hear from Belfry fans who was more athletic Lawrence Co or Lex Cath. I know it's hard to believe around the state sometimes when we talk of skill kids in EKY. Robert and Timmy Dalton are freakish athletes!

I may have interpreted the question differently.

 

I interpreted the question to mean "Using the KHSAA brackets, did the two best teams play in the Championship games"" Because two teams from the same district may be the best teams in the state in their class, such as many years with the case of CovCath/Highlands district or for several years the LexCath/Boyle County district or for several years the "Super District", but can NEVER be in the finals at the same time.

 

With that interpretation, I went to the brackets and looked at the "Best of the East" vs the "Best of the West" from before the games started.

 

My championship games would have been:

 

Paintsville vs Beechwood

Danville vs Mayfield

Belfry vs Elizabethtown

Johnson Central vs South Warren

Pulaski County vs Bowling Green

Simon Kenton vs Male

 

Only two came to pass. So 4 no and 2 yes

Kash Daniel actually playing Paintsville is the best 1A team. Then Trinity in 6A

I voted Yes on 1A because I thought Beechwood was the best team in 1A until they were proven not to be.

 

I voted Yes in 2A because I think NCC is better than people want to give them credit for.

 

I voted Yes in 3A because it was clear Belfry was the best in the East and the best from the West made it to WKU. Hard to argue LexCath wasn't the best in the West in 3A.

@Watusi. Here it goes. I know I am opening myself up for bashing, but that hasn't stopped me yet. Lol. I thought that even though Belfry slammed LexCath in BG, won their way convincingly to the title, and looked totally dominating doing so that an easy path to the title game worked in their benefit in a huge way. The west was totally loaded, no doubt about it. I felt all of these teams suffered from let downs off their previous games. A problem Belfry didn't have to face. I thought Central showed it first, after a big game with Boyle Co, the looked lethargic against LexCath in their next match up. E'town was next, after the hail Mary win at Caldwell, they were sleepwalking in the semis. LexCath suffered some of the same in the title game. A bad match up for them in Belfry did nothing but enhance that. BELFRY IS A VERY DESERVING CHAMPION AND PROVED TO BE THE BETTER TEAM IN BG. I believe that if you look back at their season schedule you will see they too suffered through this during their tough stretch of games in late September -early October. Win over Knoxville, loss to Midland, and narrowly escaping Lawrence Co who they later blew out.

I thought Mayfield suffered the same problem against NCC, after a battle with DeSales, they too were flat in the title game. I don't think many would disagree that DeSales was a much better team than NCC.

@TIGER1988, that is an honest answer and I won't bash you for it. I am the one who asked you for it and I appreciate your willingness to discuss it. It is one of the reasons I asked you directly because I knew you wouldn't be bashful about it, and that is a good thing. I actually agree with you that some of those teams probably had a let down along the way. I would argue that great teams don't do that in the playoffs and if you have a trap game loss in the playoffs, then maybe you weren't the better team. Sometimes the intagibles are just as important as the tangibles and the mental side of the game is one that you cannot overlook, and should be part of the measure of any team. Some of that comes with experience, both for the players and also for the coaches. Even the most talented teams have to develop that ability to re-focus every week or they run the risk of losing to a less talented, but more focused team. In a survive and advance playoff scenario, that ability is paramount and definitely, in my opinion, is an intangible that great teams must have.

 

You still didn't answer the one question I was asking. You voted NO that the best 2 teams in 3A did not make it to Bowling Green. Which 2 teams do you think were the best?

I knew this would happen. Kash didn't play and everyone thinks Pikeville was not the best team out of the east. Regardless of he had played or not, Pikeville would have won. The first game where Paintsville won, Pikeville had a different QB and also gave that game away. But that's ok. This is an opinion thread. I just wish people would acknowledge that. Probably have people saying if Stringer played, Beechwood would have won. We will never know. But the title is in Pikeville and we just lined up and played who was in front of us.

I'm going to take this to mean two best in the class, not the the two best that the tournament structure would allow.

 

1A: YES, because Kash Daniels was out. Otherwise NO.

2A: NO, NCC played very well, but from looking at both games I thought DeSales just edged them out.

3A: YES, Lex Cath is the team that survived the west gauntlet, even though they weren't the best match for Belfry, I have to give them the credit for making it through that crowded bracket.

 

4A: YES, South Warren just did what they did, I can't think of anyone in the class who would've done better than JC.

 

5A: YES, Fern Creek and Owensboro were very good, but I'd still have Pulaski above them.

 

6A: NO, Lafayette did better than I expected and kudos to them, but as has been oft repeated, the championship was decided in the quarterfinals.

I was referring to posters who've commented saying they thought it was Paintsville out of the east with a healthy Kash. My bad for not clarifying.

I gotcha. I said something like that too but I meant Paintsville instead of Beechwood. Pikeville is still my #1 either way.

@Watusi. I feel that Central was the best team in the west. Their letdown cost them a title game appearance. Wouldn't it have been sweet to see a final 8 with Belfry, Central, LexCath, E'town,Caldwell, Boyle, PT, and Lawrence. What a playoff!!!! Opportunities to see that many good teams face off in one class are few and far between with a 6 class system.
