Umpires talk. Teams get reputations and they are typically earned and not good. I've had coaches come up to me and question some of the dumbest stuff ever and when you're out there you don't want to hear it. He absolutely has the right to say "you have a reputation, I don't want to talk to you." (I would never judge a coach by a word of mouth reputation just like I wouldn't use the "one more word" threat to warn a guy off the bat.)

I wouldn't do that. I think you are right to an extent, but he can still say it whether you or I deem it inappropriate (and really stupid) or not.

Honestly a lot of umpires get a power trip and bring it to the field. Telling someone you don't want trouble because they have a reputation is not uncalled for though. A lot of umpires tell a coach to be quiet and quickly say "one more word." That leads to a quick ejection in most cases. It's better to stearnly tell a coach/player "I've had enough this conversation is over." If they don't heed that warning then one more word is acceptable.

 

The thing that gets me though is baseball is the one and only sport where complaining is not acceptable and I think that's great. If baseball umpires reffed in the NBA guys would get thrown out in the first quarter. After a few weeks the players would stop crying though.

 

Also, it is not mandatory (or even necessary) for an umpire to attempt a handshake. If the coach wants to shake hands that's fine, but he should be the innitiator of the handshake not the umpire. However, if someone tries to shake your hand and you reject it because of a B2 baseball game your class meter just dropped IMO about 100 points. If his partner umpire really did apologize for his actions I'd never work with that guy again. You're out there as a team and you live and die as a team.

 

The balk rule in B ball is stupid. The coaches tell the umps to call it and complain when they do call it (or don't whatever benefits there team). I've had more trouble explaining balks to coaches then they are worth. There are a lot of balks that are never called at this level (going to the mouth) because it's too much for most of these kids to remember.

After the pitcher came to a set point during his half windup, he would raise his glove again to a different set point and then go home with it or throw to a base. BTW, these same two teams played today with the Hosea Hitmen winning 15-4 in 6 inning. I got there a few minutes late but I heard that the same pitcher that pitched the last game was pitching this game. He was called for a balk today for the same move that caused this thread to be started.

I understand Hosea came out the other day and made a statement. The same pitcher that shut them out last week only lasted a inning and a third. If Hosea can get guys on base they will win this one!!!

Agreed, and yes it does effect the base runners. I do believe that is the point that the Hosea coach was making to the base umpire the other day when they lost that game. He was arguing that his base runners were confused as to when to steal or stay at home based on the pitchers double move. Thats when this umpire told the Hosea coach he knew the kid was balking but he wasnt going to call it because in his opinion it wasnt going to change the outcome of the game. I am sorry but a balk is a balk especially at this age and definately during the semis of the Regional championships of the Greater Cinti Knothole Tourney.

I am not from Northern Kentucky. I don't mean anything negative by what I am going to say. But 26 posts on Bluegrass Preps (which is a high school site or it wouldn't be called preps) about a Knothole tournament and the ensuing arguments between adults.... Do we really have to wonder any further about why kids act the way they do now a days?

agree, maybe i should have been more direct. its about the mis-prioritization. Somehow, we are now seeing insults and insinuations about a summer league game by parents, etc. and again, is it any wonder why the kids act like they do. Maybe its just me.

Unfortunately its at the little league level due to the competiveness that society has placed on select sports. Just 10 to 15 years ago the same comment was probably being made about H.S. sports but if you havent noticed sports are a big business out there and kids and parents are jockeying for attention and an any edge over the competition. So if you havent already noticed by this thread Ky. takes its sports very seriously even at the 13 yr old level and its worth debating about for us. Whats next
