Right Or Wrong

I was at a B2 Knothole game on Sat, when the Homeplate umpire told the eventual losing coach that their team had a reputation and not to start any trouble. When the game was over the same umpire called the losing coach a poor sport and a lack of class when the coach refused to shake the umpires hand. Does the umpire deserve to make these comments and be able to get away with this because of his 2 hours of authority. Any Thoughts!!!

Both could have showed more class and sportsmanship after the game.

When did the initial conversation between the coach and umpire occur? What was the "reputation" to which the umpire was referring? If it was me I would be contacting the district supervisor from which the umpire came to let them know what had occurred.

How old was the umpire? Not calling a particular ump out it just seems that knothole has to resort to some young kids calling games that probably shouldn't be.

It happened during the game. The coach between innings went to the umpire to dispute a hesitation pattern the opposing pitcher was doing during his delivery. The coach told the umpire his kids were having a hard time deciding when to steal. The umpire flat out said he needed to do a better job of coaching his kids. I think that comment is way out of line. Trust me, he will be or has allready been reported.

He was old enough to know not to say some of the stuff he was saying. The other umpire said he was sorry for the actions of his partner after the game to the grandfather of one of the players. Can't say any names, but grandfather has been around the game for nearly 40 years and is one of the most highly respected high school officials in the state of ky. He wasn't happy with this umpire and it almost got real ugly real quick.

I begin by saying, I wasn't there and no nothing about the incident but here is my comments.

3 sides to every story....Coaches side, Umpires side and somewhere in the middle the truth.....

Umpires comment, was more of a human reaction rather than a comment as his capacity as an Umpire. His comment before the game, was to probably head off anything from happening during the game and each game is different and shouldn't have been said in my opinion, unless a comment was made before/during this game, on this date.

When the coach did not shake hands after the game, may have confirmed what the Umpire already knew, thus the comments before the game....hard for the kids to learn respect and display good sportsmanship, when the coach does not display it.

Everyone involved must have forgot the reason they gathered in the first place, so kids could play Baseball....:thumb:

I guess if this would of happened before the game it would be different. This was said during the game so it confirms you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Coaches are role models and Umpires should not be noticed but I truly find it hard to believe, that a "qualified" Umpire would make a statement like that, without some previous interaction of observation.

Nonetheless, I was not present and at a Knothole game, both perhaps forgot that players, fans and everyone were watching.

You may want to rethink this entire arguement. Grandpa made a XXX of himself. Was it the short man syndrome coming out? Before you jump my line, please know my perspective is being drawn straight out of your team's dugout. Not everyone shares your perspective. The fact is the pitcher on the other team shut your team down and someone else had to be the blame. Also, if the other umpire was so good, why did he NOT call the balk if it was a balk? Stay focused on the next game instead. You guys still have a chance to win the tournament. But, I can tell you this come into the finals and if you go to Blue Ash, your parents and grandpa there will find a very quick trip to the parking lot if the same kind of anger comes to the fence. Rest assured about that.

That's a great post if we were talking about how the losing team got beat by a better team that day. But were not!!!!! Right or Wrong, does the umpire have the right to make the remarks he made that day, before the game, during the game, in the parking lot, or at the local ice cream shop. Nobody was complaining about losing the game. The simple fact grandpa was making is that we were there to watch the kids play, not watch the umpire do his job. If the losing coach was so in the wrong for questioning, not arguing a call then why was he not warned the proper way and this thing was nipped in the first place.

As I said, you may want to rethink your point. Words from your own crowd was embarassing and out of hand. Those were words about your fans and your coach from your fans and your coach. As to the why questions, you need to take that up with the those who did the game. It sounds like a loud conversation was going on. Maybe your questions could be yelled out?

I saw the whole thing up close and I personally think the losing coach most definately did the right thing by just walking away and difusing the situation in total. Unfortunately that didnt satisfy the umpire and I think he felt like he deserved a handshake that just wasnt going to happen that day. And yes Grandpa did get pretty crazy out there and should of just let it go but I think he saw a couple of guys give his hall of fame profession a black eye and took great offense to it. I dont think anybody is taking anything away from the team that won, they won and thats that.

Honestly a lot of umpires get a power trip and bring it to the field. Telling someone you don't want trouble because they have a reputation is not uncalled for though. A lot of umpires tell a coach to be quiet and quickly say "one more word." That leads to a quick ejection in most cases. It's better to stearnly tell a coach/player "I've had enough this conversation is over." If they don't heed that warning then one more word is acceptable.

The thing that gets me though is baseball is the one and only sport where complaining is not acceptable and I think that's great. If baseball umpires reffed in the NBA guys would get thrown out in the first quarter. After a few weeks the players would stop crying though.

Also, it is not mandatory (or even necessary) for an umpire to attempt a handshake. If the coach wants to shake hands that's fine, but he should be the innitiator of the handshake not the umpire. However, if someone tries to shake your hand and you reject it because of a B2 baseball game your class meter just dropped IMO about 100 points. If his partner umpire really did apologize for his actions I'd never work with that guy again. You're out there as a team and you live and die as a team.

The balk rule in B ball is stupid. The coaches tell the umps to call it and complain when they do call it (or don't whatever benefits there team). I've had more trouble explaining balks to coaches then they are worth. There are a lot of balks that are never called at this level (going to the mouth) because it's too much for most of these kids to remember.

What was the "balk" on the mound anyway?

Umpires talk. Teams get reputations and they are typically earned and not good. I've had coaches come up to me and question some of the dumbest stuff ever and when you're out there you don't want to hear it. He absolutely has the right to say "you have a reputation, I don't want to talk to you." (I would never judge a coach by a word of mouth reputation just like I wouldn't use the "one more word" threat to warn a guy off the bat.)
