EKU wants to be a player in hosting KHSAA football finals.

Featured Replies

An article in the Herald Leader had the AD of EKU mentioning that he would like to host more high school events, including the Football state finals. With all of the controversy this season with WKU hosting the C-USA finals is EKU becoming the next host a viable option for the KHSAA? I know there are contractual obligations that keep the finals at WKU for the next few years but when it expires we can expect EKU to make a serious bid to become the host. EKU is beginning stadium renovations in the next 3-6 months.

When asked about competing to host non-NCAA football events such as the six KHSAA football finals — which currently call WKU’s Houchens/L.T. Smith Stadium home — Lochmueller spoke more broadly about EKU becoming a player again when it comes to hosting high school state championships, including football.

“I don’t know why certain things moved off campus several years ago,” said Lochmueller. “I wasn’t here so I don’t know whether it was a financial thing or a facility thing. I don’t really know what it was. But what I’d like to see is state championships — basketball, football, whatever they might be — I’d like to see us participating in that. ... I’d like to see us be able to do some more things at the high school level. I think it’s a great opportunity to bring young men and young women on campus.”

this is the excerpt from the article that mentions EKU's interest in being the host.

I have no problem with EKU hosting the finals...much shorter drive for me if I want to run up for a game or two.

I'd love for EKU to get the finals. Now let's see if they can put up a credible bid next time the bid process takes place.

For selfish reasons I'd love EKU to host. I'd be able to watch all the games and still sleep in my own bed at night. I think it would help EKU's host bid if they could get accepted into the FBS.

The east side would be the side opposite of the existing grandstands, correct?

That looks really nice. Looks like a "club" type level up top which would hopefully provide a place like the current setup at WKU for those there for multiple games.

I would love it at EKU, because it cuts my travel time in half, down to 2.5 hours roughly. That would be nice.

How far is it from the western schools like Mayfield to Richmond?

4 hours and 23 minutes from Mayfield to EKU. Not much different than those in Pike County traveling to Bowling Green.

About an hour shorter than our trip to BG from Belfry.

I've said before though, I don't mind driving to BG for the chance to watch my team play in a state championship game. That is a trade I would make every single year.

Was this AD around during the time when EKU reluctantly hosted the All A Classic basketball? Because I got the impression EKU and Richmond didn't much care to be hosting that event.

No. He was just hired this year.

Make this happen!

And another question: How do we know this exact scenario — or something similar — won't happen when EKU is hosting? If they stay in I-AA, there's the chance they keep winning in the playoffs and would have to shuffle the state finals schedule. And if they move up to I-A, then there's a chance they're good enough to host the conference finals for whatever conference they end up in.

EKU does not fix the scheduling problems we saw this year. Please stop acting like it would just because it cuts 45 minutes off your drive time to BG.

No. He was just hired this year.

Then I would like for someone to ask him how they plan on doing a better job than EKU did when it actually did have a big HS event there. You know, like actually caring. Because the All A Classic just seemed like a big imposition on EKU, at least in terms of how the community acted about it.
