And another question: How do we know this exact scenario — or something similar — won't happen when EKU is hosting? If they stay in I-AA, there's the chance they keep winning in the playoffs and would have to shuffle the state finals schedule. And if they move up to I-A, then there's a chance they're good enough to host the conference finals for whatever conference they end up in.

 

EKU does not fix the scheduling problems we saw this year. Please stop acting like it would just because it cuts 45 minutes off your drive time to BG.

That's why I asked the question in my first comment. "Is EKU a viable option to host?" For purely selfish reasons I would love for it to be at EKU but Eastern presents challenges of its own. I had mentioned earlier if EKU can get into the FBS by the time the next bids roll around it will help their case. Most likely they would end up in the MAC or sun belt. The sun belt does not have a conf championship and the MAC plays at a neutral site. If EKU remains in the FCS....they may not be a much better option than WKU.

Then I would like for someone to ask him how they plan on doing a better job than EKU did when it actually did have a big HS event there. You know, like actually caring. Because the All A Classic just seemed like a big imposition on EKU, at least in terms of how the community acted about it.

 

I don't know what happened that twisted your shorts towards EKU hosting the All A. Perhaps your drink was watery. Perhaps the weather that affected the tournament a couple of times while they were hosting led to logistics nightmares for everyone. I don't know. But perhaps YOU should ask him. And while you're at it, perhaps consider that EKU is more centrally located to the majority of the state population. That has an effect on non school affiliated fans who come to games, as well as the schools themselves. It's going to be a long haul for someone every year, likely. It just makes more sense to be closer to a larger portion of the population.

 

One thing I'm curious about, knowing how well Highlands usually travels, as well as Trinity and St. X, what was the total attendance and then how much bigger would it have been (if at all) if one of he traditional big school powers had advanced? I know Pikeville was well represented, as was Belfry, for their respective classes. Beechwood did not bring as many fans as Pikeville. Would that extrapolate to a relocation?

 

WKU had very nice facilities, I commented on them in a seperate thread. Fairly easy access, liked the parking garage (REALLY handy in the event of inclement weather), seating was good, and I thought at least for us, we did a good job of making it loud. If EKU expands to 20k or 22k like is discussed, it puts it on par with the seating at WKU. So the stadium size doesn't become a point of contention (it's not now, it's how everyone is basically on one side at EKU), parking and immediate area lodging become the only issues I see. Lodging from Richmond to Lexington is more than sufficient, so really that's out. I think parking would be the biggest thorn for EKU. I've heard of plans for expanded parking though. Interesting topic all around.

During the bulk of EKUs hosting years, they had a different president who, frankly, was not as involved in the community as they could have been. The new president seems much more driven towards community involvement and I think would help drive the excitement level up again.

 

As for logistics, as much as I have/do travel, the trip wasn't a HUGE imposition, but it was a lengthy one. 4.5 to 5 hours is a long one way trip no matter who it is for. I just happen to think the majority of the "griping" is due to a point I referenced, a majority of the population would be better able to day trip where needed. $139.00 per night hotel rates certainly play into it as well (that's what I had to pay for basically a place to sleep for 6 hours).

 

But make no mistake. If my son and his team make it back, we will do it again and again. But likely, the topic won't go away any time soon.

Not that I know of. But the gripe threads about the finals schedule being moved around found a lot of people complaining vociferously about it, like WKU somehow planned it this way, and suggesting other locations — such as EKU — as a solution.

 

I now know, however, that it was less about the inconvenience of the schedule being shifted than it was about the inconvenience of having to drive a little farther than they'd like.

In fairness I only see folks saying we like the drive time better. Has anyone said it would fix the WKU/Conference USA issue?

 

Richmond is a 30 minute drive from my house so I'd love it there. I'd go to more games. I love it in BG as well and have zero issues with them staying in BG.
