Plan to level the playing field in Kentucky

Featured Replies

Here is my plan to balance the power football programs in Kentucky. The Power schools ( Trinity, ST X, Male ), separate from the state governing body and schedule a mix of state and out of state powerhouses from around the country. These schools can then compete for a berth in a 12 team national postseason tournament, based on national rankings.

A Rating Percentage Index (RPI) system will be used to determine playoff qualifiers in state and out of state for a National Playoff system. The RPI ranks teams based on its winning percentage and strength of schedule, determined by winning percentages. The RPI is used by the NCAA to help determine postseason seedings, including those for the men's basketball tournament. All conference champions, in state, will get automatic bids to the playoffs. Then, the top teams left, based on RPI, will also advance to a playoff. Numbers for the wildcard teams would have to be worked out. Maybe a 16 team playoff format for each classification based on a 4 classification format. Use the RPI ratings, teams with a 2 year RPI average would then be placed in separate districts. The rest of the districts and regions are filled with teams based on a snaked order of their RPI rankings. IE, the # 8 team based on RPI would be with the # 7, # 9 with # 6, then # 10 with #5, and so on. Then the districts and regions would be more evenly divided based on the RPI that was established providing a more competitive regular season and postseason playoff system. Pretty radical, huh?

Not a fan of this

You probably aught to just go down to the store and get Central Hardin a trophy of some sort and leave everyone else alone.

That would cost those "power" school way too much money for travel. And the cost of doing a national tournament would be astronomical.

But I like your idea:thumb:

Who determines the power schools? Who runs the organization that oversees this "national power school conference? Who pays the insane travel that will be involved??

Your solving a minor problem by creating a bunch of other problems.

You do realize not one private school won this weekend. I think it's been leveled.

in a day and age where there is a lot of concern over education and spending, where is the need for this and where is the funding coming from? This is a high school sport with little lasting value other than a some bragging rights and something to talk about in the bar over a beer when you get older (and on line for some!!).

Would all the 6A Schools be willing to foot the bill for those schools to travel and not compete for a State Title?

"We'll pay you to let us win a trophy" probably has a better chance of flying than "Stop beating us up and pick on someone your own size"

Maybe I have too much time on my hands, but I know that Colorado is going to try a format similar to this one starting in 2016, minus shifting the power schools to a national tournament. If you are fine with the Belfry's, Bowling Greens, Mayfields, Highlands, Male, ST X, and Trinity dominating every year, then the status quo will do.

That would require leaving KHSAA which would have insurance implications. The only way to avoid the Louisville teams is to get reclassified to 5A.

Its not just about them , lets make the teams in this state more competitive with each other.

Imagine a world where people never moved. Where just timidly go to school in the same place for 13 years regardless. Nobody transfers EVER. Nobody has open enrollment. The federal government tells every person where to go to school.

Are you with me so far?

There would still be 6 champions this weekend.

There would still be 6 teams who are doing it better than everybody else.

And people would find something else to whine about.

Its not just about them , lets make the teams in this state more competitive with each other.

Why? Why look up at greatness and say thats awesome, lets tear them down to our level? Why not go to your school board, principal, head coach and booster president and tell them to figure out whats going on at the top and copy it and beat it?

So let's punish some teams for being too good. If being good was simply related to what was in the local water, then I get the need to do something. But bottom line is those teams that "dominate" have just done a great job at building programs.
