10th Region Rankings & Weekly Review (12-7-15)

Featured Replies

We're finished with a week's worth of games, and there has been ample excitement throughout the 10th Region. As we enter Week 2, no changes have been made to our Regional Rankings, although some slight movement could be justified.

#1 - Campbell County (2-0)

The Camels won the Huck Turner Tip-Off Classic, which began with a Friday night win over host Harrison County, 61-53. Trailing 50-49, Campbell closed the game on a 13-4 run, with Matt Wilson scoring 6 of those points and junior Cole Hegyi scoring 5. Wilson, who battled foul problems throughout, finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Hegyi added 19. Twenty-four hours later the Camels held off a fierce comeback attempt by Augusta in the title game, beating the Panthers 62-59. Wilson again paced the victors with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Hegyi finished with 17 and senior point guard Trent McGovney netted 13.

#2 - Montgomery County (3-0)

Matt Daniel's club won all 3 outings to start the season, beginning with a 61-53 defeat of visiting Bracken County on Tuesday night, paced by Jerryd Jones' 18 points and 8 boards. On Thursday the Indians won on the road against Rowan County 62-60, thanks in large part to the hot shooting of senior guard Art Walker. Walker drained 8-10 3-pointers en route to scoring a team-high 29 points. Defensively, senior wing Cody Parsley stepped up big, holding Vikings guard Michael Antrobus to just 2 points. MoCo then defeated Scott County 67-62 on Saturday in Paris' Kentucky Bank Classic, with Walker scoring 16 points (4 treys) and Jones netting 13.

#3 - Scott (2-0)

No team in the 10th proved more entertaining in Week 1 than Brad Carr's Eagles, who won a pair of Overtime thrillers by 2 points on the road. Jake Ohmer pumped in 35 points in Tuesday night's 92-90 win over Pendleton County, and then the junior came back on Saturday to break the single-game Scott scoring record (a record he held) by dropping 54 on George Rogers Clark in a 100-98 triumph.

#4 - Paris (1-1)

The Greyhounds were short-handed in a Tuesday night opening road loss to Scott County (83-73), although junior guard Tayjin Cunningham did his part in scoring a team-high 20 points. Paris had no problem, however, getting into the win column on Saturday, turning back visiting Sayre 75-28 on Saturday in the Kentucky Bank Classic. This Tuesday will be a big one for the 'Hounds, as #2 Montgomery County comes to town.

#5 - Augusta (2-1)

Brian Kirk's first game as the head coach of his alma mater went well, as the Panthers blitzed Robertson County 85-46 on Tuesday night. Senior guard Connor Maddox was outstanding, finishing with 28 points (10-12 FG, 4-6 3pt, 4-4 FT). The Panthers then overcame a 30-27 halftime deficit in Friday night's Huck Turner Tip-Off Classic to beat Bourbon County 61-53. Maddox again paced Augusta with 19 points, while Owens Crawford and Tanner Pugh chipped in with 15 and 14, respectively. In the Saturday championship game, the Panthers trailed Campbell County by as many as 18 in the 2nd half, but came storming back, only to fall short 62-59. Maddox scored 17 and Crawford 15 in a losing effort. Showdown in Brooksville with former coach Jason Hinson and the Polar Bears looms on Tuesday.

#6 - Pendleton County (0-3)

The Wildcats opened the season by losing an OT heartbreaker to Scott 92-90 in Falmouth on Tuesday, despite getting 33 points and 8 rebounds from freshman Dontaie Allen. With point guard Hunter Wood sidelined due to a hand injury, the Wildcats dropped two more games over the weekend. Scott County defeated the Wildcats in Georgetown on Friday 78-66, though Allen went for 29 and 13. Saturday saw Keaton Belcher's squad fall to Oldham County 70-55 in the Kentucky Bank Classic. Allen again led with 20 points, while Tanner Daugherty and Mason Dennie both added 13.

#7 - Mason County (1-1)

The Buddy Biggs era began with a Tuesday night 83-44 win over Western Brown (OH) in Maysville. Pig Williams led the Royals with 20 points, Isiah Garrison had 18, Darren Williams 17, and Conner Sweeney 14. Saturday's road battle with Simon Kenton was not nearly as successful, as the Royals fell hard to the Pioneers 80-55. The Royals have a pair of home games against 10th Region teams this week (Bourbon County and Scott) before ending the week facing Woodford County in the Bart Rison Classic at Montgomery County.

#8 - George Rogers Clark (1-1)

Jyles Anderson scored 25 points on 10-19 shooting to help the Cardinals to a season-opening 93-50 win over visiting Nicholas County on Tuesday night. The senior guard added another strong 25 point performance on Saturday, but GRC lost a home OT dandy to visiting Scott 100-98. James Cornelius netted 23 points and fellow senior Jordan Menchen contributed 19. The Cards will be on the road for a pair of games this week, including a Friday night trip to Pendleton County.

#9 - Bracken County (1-1)

Jason Hinson's tenure at Bracken County started off with a difficult road test against Montgomery County on Tuesday--a contest the Polar Bears lost 61-53. Bracken led Montgomery 28-22 at the half, but the Indians outscored the visitors 39-25 in the 2nd half. Junior guard Austin Crawford led the Polar Bears with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Bracken rebounded, however, with an 80-43 Saturday afternoon thrashing of Pineville in the Kentucky Bank Classic. Senior big man Jarred Lippert led the way with 14 points and 6 rebounds and the Polar Bears drained 11-21 3-pointers.

#10 - Harrison County (2-1)

A 15-5 2nd quarter propelled the Thorobreds to a 66-44 victory over St. Patrick on Monday night in Cynthiana. Eleven Breds notched the scoring column in the convincing win. On Friday night in their own Huck Turner Tip-Off Classic, the Breds put themselves in position to upset Campbell County, but ultimately fell short 61-53. Zack Pulliam and Leon Commodore both earned 12 points in defeat. The next evening, Harrison held off Bourbon County in the consolation game by a score of 58-57. Commodore's 17 points led Larry Kendall's team.

#11 - Bishop Brossart (2-0)

The Mustangs probably make the strongest case for the team that should move up in the rankings. Mike Code's club dispatched St. Henry 66-48 in Alexandria on Tuesday, aided by 33 points from senior forward Jackson Crawford. The Stangs took to the road on Friday, where they led Newport 51-47 with just over 3 minutes to play and ended up pulling away for a 64-54 win. Joey Hickman scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, while fellow senior Jacob Zai added 16 points of his own. Brossart's trademark stingy defense held Newport star Ethan Snapp to 13 points.

#12 - Bourbon County (1-2)

Nick Sosby's Colonels opened the season on Wednesday with a hard-fought, 57-46 road win against St. Patrick. Bourbon outscored the Saints 29-13 in the final frame to get the W and were led in scoring by Ameryon Blackburn's 19 points. The Colonels led Augusta by 3 at the half in Friday night's Huck Turner Tip-Off Classic, but eventually fell 61-53. Playing without Blackburn, the Colonels were paced by Chandler Thomas, who scored a game-high 25 points. Blackburn was back in action on Saturday and scored 25 points, but Bourbon was nipped by host Harrison County 58-57 in the Consolation game.

#13 - St. Patrick (2-2)

The Saints took to the floor a whopping 4 times in Week 1 and lost their first two outings: 66-44 at Harrison County on Monday and 57-46 against Bourbon County at home on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Ben Swolsky went for 16 points and 14 rebounds in the loss to the Breds, then scored 17 to lead the Saints against Bourbon. Swolsky had 13 and 6 in a Friday win over visiting Latin, then earned his best game of the week with 23 points and 10 boards in a Saturday 73-46 win at home vs. St. Francis. Senior Jakaar Frey also had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

#14 - Nicholas County (0-3)

The Bluejackets, under first-year coach Matthew Botner, got off to a bumpy start last week, falling in all three outings. The Jackets lost at Bath County 87-69 on Monday, getting 18 points from Elijah Barnett and 16 from sophomore Spencer Morris. Twenty-four hours later, George Rogers Clark bested the Jackets 93-50, with Barnett scoring 15 in a losing effort. Then on Saturday, Garrard County beat Nicholas 67-40. Botner will take his team on the road one more time before they play their first home game, which will take place on Friday against Harrison County.

#15 - Robertson County (0-2)

Mason Burden scored 21 points and grabbed 5 boards, but the Black Devils fell hard at Augusta to open the season on Tuesday, losing 85-46. In Robertson's home-opener on Friday night, the team fell 54-42 to Dayton. John Brown's club will look to get into the win column with a visit to Silver Grove on Tuesday night.

#16 - Calvary Christian (2-1)

It was a very nice start for new Cougars head coach Ryan Neises, as he guided his team to a 2-1 Week 1. Calvary defeated visiting Latin 57-34 on Monday, powered by 13 points from both Derrick Camp and Aikeem Riley. Riley scored 28 points on Thursday night, but the Cougars dropped one at Dayton 63-44. Then on Friday in Grant County's Above The Rim Classic, Calvary nipped Burgin 51-50. Riley scored 22 and Justin Wade 21, and the duo combined to hit 8-16 3-pointers in the victory.

#17 - Silver Grove (0-3)

It was 3 games and 3 losses for the Big Trains to start the season. Howard Brownstein's squad lost a 74-25 home contest to Beechwood on Tuesday, then fell again at home, 49-37 to Villa Madonna on Wednesday. The Grove then finished the week with a road loss to Felicity-Franklin (OH) 59-44 on Saturday.

The 10th must be one tough region if Brossart can't crack the top 10. Thanks for the report Randy.

Parity is the watch word for the early part of the season. No consistently dominate team at this point. It'll be interesting to see how the field separates itself by February. Tomorrow night's Moco vs' Paris game will start the process.....

Nice review! Although my Wildcats are 0-3 I still feel good about them although I fear they may not be a very good defensive team this year. We'll know more about them after the GRC and Augusta games.

There's about 6-8 teams that could win the 10th this year. Gonna be a good year for basketball.

Brossart should crack the Top 10 after defeating both Newport and St. Henry.

Brossart can't get any love after two huge wins against two great teams. In Northern Kentucky rankings, Brossart was/is unranked and beat Newport, 7th, and St. Henry, 9th, or the other way around. Anyway, they could at least be put above Bracken or Pendleton.

Shhh! :sssh: I'm pretty sure the folks at Brossart are rather happy flying under the radar. All those ranked teams can worry about all the other ranked teams and leave little ol Brossart alone.

I will tell you the same thing I told another Brossart fan who took issue with my having the Stangs ranked 11th (I won't give away this fan's name, but he often weasels his way to the front row & he stalks me at Dollar Stores all across Pendleton and Campbell County. He's also big into ballet).

Anyway, I told him that I don't doubt for a bit that Brossart is better than what I have them ranked here. As always, they are very well-coached, they have a legit All Region type player in Crawford, and just a solid, disciplined overall team. And as I told my friend, I am very likely to pick the Stangs to win the Class A.

I decided to keep these teams ranked the same way because I felt like the sample size was too small. A few teams are probably more deserving of being lower (Mason County being at the top of that list IMO). And a team or two are more deserving of being a bit higher. Brossart is at the top of that list IMO.

My suspicion is that the 10th Region has MUCH more parity than a lot of us imagined in the pre-season. And that's scary, because most 10th Region fans knew there would be more parity this year than in years past.

Randy, I can agree with what you just said.

I noticed the Stangs have had 2 different starting lineups already this year. Ridder and Rolf have taken turns starting. Which do you see as a better fit to be in the starting lineup? Ridder is an athletic and strong guard. He can shoot and is a fierce bulldog when it comes to hustle. Rolf is a very good dribbler and can pass pretty well, but he is very weak and struggles at times being a team player. Both are very good defenders.

Yup. Gonna be an entertaining season!

I haven't seen them this year, so I will defer to Mustang, TAC, and others who have. I'm hoping to see the Stangs at Bracken County on the 18th.

Both are interchangeable parts of a team. I really don't think it matters.
