Saw this post and had to ask,

When do you make adjustments, both offensively and defensively ?

Take into account large school that have 1 phase players and small Scholls that have 2 phase players.

Small school, obviously we have guys that have to go both ways. Minor adjustments can be made on the sideline or during a timeout.

Major adjustments are better served at halftime when you can really use a whiteboard and walk through what you want. JMO

Typically, since I'm in charge of defensive line, I'm watching how we are getting blocked. Once I've established what's going, I talk with the lineman individually when I can. Now since I am part of small school football, it's tough to make adjustments during the game because 2 of my 3 d-lineman start on o-line but I make sure every chance I can, I talk to them. Halftime is when I usually go over as a group what is happening and what we need to do to defeat the blocking simply by having them look at tendencies given away by the lineman. I wish I could have a 2 platoon team but it's just not the case.

We try not to have our OL go both ways. This way I can talk to them while we are on defense. It also of course helps them stay fresh. Having good staff helps with the adjustments.

On defense we make adjustment sometimes play to the next play with calls. Been lucky for a longtime with some really educated football players that understand the game. Adjustments come easy with kids that study the game. Offense typically has to happen between series and big changes at halftime.

This day and age of uptempo football it is important for your big guys to play only 1 way. Games are longer because they play more plays.

Face guarding is ONLY illegal in high school, as I understand it. Also, this is a commonly miscalled penalty. Many officials throw it if a defender has his back to the ball and attempts to defend the pass. Technically, the play is only a penalty if the defender attempts to shield the eye of the receiver. Often times it is called simply if the defender has his back to the passer... Once receiver touches the ball, there should be no penalty for defender breaking up a pass, no matter where his head/eyes are. One of the most common mistaken flags thrown, IMO.

Of course, I am an old DB, so I am a little hyper-sensitive to this particular call.

Lets see if we have any coaches that will answer this,,

Your team is O and four in the conference, you record is 1 and 10, do you really want to travel 4 hours to face an undefeated team that you know is going to put a running clock on you before halftime?

I saw a Union County team almost beat a Bowling Green team in the first round. It was the 1st BG team to win State in the mid 90's. UC was 3-8. A 2 pt play with less than 2 minutes decided it for BG. Any team has a chance. If you get beat, so be it. There is no difference is losing by 1 or 50. Losing is losing. I teach our kids to play hard & have fun. Every time we lost, I had to work harder. There is no sin in losing, only sin is if you don't correct what is wrong and try again. So I believe that the extra week is good. While I say that, I believe that on the top two teams should make the playoffs. Either play 11 games regular season or play 10 and start a week later.

The reason to do it is because no one would ever do that. Its probably exactly the opposite of what the Def coordinator told the defense what was coming.

Now on the other hand you better have a good balanced game going into that and a very reliable RB.

The buck sweep is primarily a boundary run that is very successful in today's game, so I would have to strongly disagree with you. I don't advocate running the ball on 3rd and 7 often but if I am the buck sweep is one of my go to plays and that is a boundary call.

In your opinion, why are you calling bucksweep a boundary call?

I will run the ball to the boundary. I like it when we have trips to the field and the defense likes to play man to man on the single wr with the the CB back to the Qb. Favorite play is speed option reading the OLB, works great against teams that love to blitz outside linebacker on the weak side of trips, we just read him.

We use to run triple into the boundary a lot due to how teams played the field. While not true buck sweep Mueller ran Buck into the boundary. He rarely ran it to the field. I didn't ask him why. It might be just a formation thing for him since he set the RB to the field in most cases.

While this may not always be the case many teams that run split field coverage set their passing strength to the field if the offense is in a balanced set. This can bring an extra defender to the party on that side of the field if a team in in a split field coverage.

In that situation the numbers would actually suggest a run to the boundary, if a team is running the ball.

That said in EKY we don't see much split field coverage and if we do there isn't the plus 1 to the read side that you see in say TCU's defensive scheme.

Just something to think about.

To go along with that a little, some teams play field boundary defense instead of strength (i.e where a TE aligns). Some teams slant or the like to the field instead of the boundary. One example is a team I watched on film always put their 1 to the field and their 3 to the boundary no matter what the set.

It really all depends on tendencies. Every team is different. Do they run to WS or B? Do they run strong weak or strong? Also is it formation specific. Every team has their tales you just have to know how to read them and use them.
