The following is a quote from a letter sent out from Julian Tackett to member schools dated August 31, 2015:

 

"While many of us like to try "new things" and love getting our events out there, the cold, hard truth is that we can't continue expanding in new ways that provide something for free, when there should, in fact, be a charge."

 

"This program allows the school itself to originate broadcasts on the network, using a minimal amount of equipment. Similar to the program that we collaborated with I-High to develop several years ago, this is a no-frills way to get your content out there for people to see, without spending a great deal of money."

 

"The network has a very successful model where the paying subscriber (the end user) to the network purchases a pass (daily, monthly an annual plans are available), and has unlimited access to content for that period. For events produced by the school, the producing school receives a large portion of that subscriber fee (50%). For regular season play up to the state finals, the KHSAA receives NO portion of any webcast revenue from subscribers for these broadcasts."

 

"NFHS Network School Broadcast program participants are also exempt from broadcasting fees for postseason contests for the early rounds of postseason play while all other entitles will be subject to required rights fees to be paid for webcasting."

 

From my perspective as a broadcaster, IF we went from a free service to pay-to-listen my average 100 listener base would drop to about 15 and we would eliminate our alumni away at college and our students at home listening, as well as listeners from other schools who have a casual interest in our broadcasts.

 

I would also lose my ability to edit my broadcasts and download them onto CDs for our players. We are now caught in a "double jeopardy" situation, where we have to pay EZStream ($2,250) annually for an unlimited broadcast package, AND the KHSAA if we wish to broadcast their post-season playoff game broadcasts. The I-High arrangement allowed us to broadcast our games for free, and I still had access to the above stated features.

 

I/we are not in the for-profit business, but the provide-a-service business, so for us it is "No Thanks" to the KHSAA for-profit business, despite the increased costs to our program.

For what it's worth for those watching this weekend....I missed 80% of 4th quarter due to my stream freezing up when enlarged on iPad. Tonight I'm watching the WV championship. It froze at the start so I reloaded and just kept it in the original small broadcast. It hasn't frozen one time since.

Went to watch the Florida 1A final tonight and found that Bright House Network is handling the broadcasts. No TV unless you have Bright House Cable and BHN wants $6.95 a day for the stream. It was too late to do it tonight. I may do the $9.95 monthly pass next week for the 5A thru 8A finals. Depends who wins the semis tonight.

I will probably pay the $9 for tomorrow, but I'll not be around a computer most of the afternoon on Sunday. I don't like streaming on my phone.

Me too. I had the game enlarged and got maybe 10 seconds of video and it froze. I refreshed it and kept the scree minimized and it works fine.

How does the IHSAA and GHSA provide free stream? Is it because they are sponsored by NFL teams?

I want to be sure I understand, the price to every school is $2,250 and this price is sanctioned/approved/promoted by the KHSAA?

No, no, no!

 

The cost to us to braodcast via EZStream is $2,250.

 

I don't think that there is any cost, other than the cost of equipment, to broadcast through the KHSAA endorsed, NFHS pay-to-listen network.

 

What I'm saying is that by refusing to join the NFHS pay-to-listen network we NOT ONLY play EZStream $2,250 for an unlimited broadcast package, but also have to pay the KHSAA $250 each for playoff game broadcast rights.

According my facebook peeps, WYMT had a live feed on their webpage.

 

If true they will likely have it for Belfry and Johnson Central games too.

Will this be the case for the Belfry game too?

No one is allowed to stream video of the game live except the KHSAA. Anyone who wants to stream vidoe of the game must wait 72 hours.

 

Radio can stream their own live coverage, but not the KHSAA network.
