This was two bad teams playing less than their best. For some reason this NFL season seems to be dragging on. I'm ready for the playoffs.

The Week 12 Ravens/Browns Monday Night Football game had a 7.4 overnight rating on ESPN, up 4% from Ravens/Saints last year (7.1) and down 19% from 49ers/Washington in 2013 (9.1). The 7.4 is the lowest of the season for MNF, falling below the previous mark of 8.1 for Bears/Chargers in Week 9, and the sixth-lowest for any NFL window.

 

Overnights peaked at an 8.5 from 11:30-11:45 PM ET, marking just the second time since Week 1 that MNF has peaked after 10 PM ET.

 

The Ravens’ last-second win was the third straight Monday night game to have an increase in overnight ratings and the eighth of the season overall (13 total telecasts). Keep in mind that last year’s Ravens/Saints game faced unusual competition from breaking news coverage and a rescheduled Jets/Bills game.

 

ESPN’s telecast had a 10.9 rating in Baltimore and an 8.0 in Cleveland. The game was simulcast on local affiliates in both markets, with a 19.9 on Baltimore NBC affiliate WBAL and a 21.8 on Cleveland NBC affiliate WKYC. Las Vegas was the top neutral market (13.6), with Columbus (13.5) and San Diego (12.0) rounding out the top five.

I hope their numbers were down. It used to be that MNF was primetime viewing all across the nation but now they might show it on TV and they might not. A few years ago they started showing it only on the cable channel--I guess when ESPN and ABC hooked up. I don't have cable. I have an antenna and because I live close to Cinci I get a lot of local channels. But I don't get ESPN. Again, because I live close to Cinci, the Browns are not often aired on the local station because they cover the hometown team. So, Monday is a treat when there are no competing games and the Browns and their opponents will be the only teams playing.

 

I sat down in my favorite easy chair and flipped on the tube expecting to watch my favorite team play on MNF. Already knew that Johnny Football wasn't going to play but McCown is a better QB right now any way. Browns beat the Ravens earlier in the season. This should be a good night for Cleveland and the best chance we have of getting one in the win column the rest of the season.

 

TV came on and there was some special about the Charlie Brown Christmas show. Mind you, it WASN'T the Charlie Brown Christmas show it was a show ABOUT the real show. I thought, "Surely, this will pass and the game will come on at 8:30." It didn't. So I couldn't even watch the Browns when they were on MNF. I found an internet radio broadcast--it was free--and listened on my computer.

 

The ratings would be higher if they had on a channel that everyone had access to.

 

I already am beginning to hate college Bowl games because they don't show all of them on the regular channels any more. You have to have cable or direct tv or some other paid access.

 

So, I hope the ratings are low for all games only showing on cable channels.

I couldn't care less about this game or these teams, and yet I found myself yelling "What are you doing?" at the TV a half dozen times in those last 2 minutes. The worst was Cleveland, with 41 seconds to go, wasting 20 seconds calling a play while they had two timeouts left. Then the QB scrambles and instead of running out of bounds, he slides down just before going out of bounds so the Browns are forced to use a timeout. It was bad ... really bad.

Truth is, Austin Davis put them in a position to win the game. He made some mistakes that are common to young qbs and are made sometimes by seasoned qbs. But at the end of the game, the Browns were teeing it up for the game winning field goal. The fact that it turned into a "kick-six" for the other team--now that may be Brownian, but you won't ever hear me saying it, and that wasn't on Austin Davis.

 

BTW, I was a Browns fan before I was born and I will be one until after I die.
