I don't see this game being much different than Mayfield's last two (OC and DeSales). They were both knock down, drag out fights. A team doesn't get to the title game by being average, I don't care what side of the bracket they are on, so sleeping on NCC would be a big mistake. Defensively, MF has shown they can thwart air attack (OC) and ground attack (DeSales). Offensively, they just faced speed D (OC) and strength D (DS), and seemed to handle the latter a little bit better, but did well against both. I think the key for both teams will be QB play. Whichever one makes more plays gets their team over the hump. I also think NCC played a tougher schedule (not by much). Regardless, throw both records out the window. Both teams are 0-0. One game season....MF by 1.

Hopefully NewCath can force turnovers and give them a short field to score on. If Jacob Smith gets in space we will have an awesome game.

Mayfield vs. Newport Central Catholic, the State's Old Money of Class 2A will make their annual pilgrimage to the State Finals. These two programs go to Bowling Green so predictably rumor has it they have partnered with Wydham to reserve hotel rooms like it was a time share.

 

This is Mayfield's 7th consecutive trip to the State Finals and their 8th in the past 11 seasons. Newport Catholic will be visiting the promised land for their 4th consecutive year and their 9th time in the past 11 seasons.

 

The Cardinals enter after laying to waste the Western Region in their own mini-State Championship tournament culminating in the ultimate slaying of 2-time Defending 2A State Champion DeSales. The Breds enter having survived a defensive stalemate against fellow small school royalty Danville.

 

These two last met in the 2005 1A State Finals where Newport Catholic rolled to a 42-7 win.

 

Will Mayfield parlay this game into a 4th Straight Title and in the process relinguish NewCath to a Buffalo Bill-esque 4th consecutive State Runner-up Finishes?

 

Which Runningback will cement his name as the best in Class 2A? Jacob Smith of NewCath or Trajon Bright of Mayfield?

We will only know if Coach Morris gets thrown out of the game. MayfieldFan has been practicing "Now boys, don't get caught watching the paint dry." line in the event he has to take over late in the game.

Again, the line will win the game for the team that wins. Mayfield is on a mission and NCC is has got theirs too but if Mayfield plays their game I like their chances. This could be a closer game than most expect but I see a Mayfield victory.
