BigVMan23 Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 So Sarah calls me about 6:55 this morning so frantic I could barely understand her. She hit "something" and now her car is all tore up. I think she was in a little bit of shock she was so upset. So here is the damage. Threw the deer completely off the Parkway, I didn't see it but the cop who responded to the accident said it was a big one. Big ol bloody spot in the road though.
HammerTime Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Glad she is OK, those darn things can cause some serious damage.
BigVMan23 Posted November 16, 2015 Author Posted November 16, 2015 Glad she is OK, those darn things can cause some serious damage. Dead ones are literally littering the side of the roads in my part of Central KY, and saw several while back and forth to Bowling Green last week too.
Jumper_Dad Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 That'll buff out! Seriously, glad she is OK. I've always told my wife and kids that if they see a deer, dog, cat or squirrel in the road...you hit your brakes and slow down but you never swerve...you stay straight. Insurance can fix a dent! I had a classmate that totaled two vehicles swerving to miss a dog on the highway...I think it was the same dog in the same curve both times.

From the way she talked after she calmed down...I don't think she ever saw it, jumped in front of her between some cars and she was the one who took it out. Sounds like she never had time to hit the brakes. And at 70 mph down the BG Parkway just coming out of a fog back along the KY river bridge between Anderson Co and Woodford.
lawildcat Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 That stinks! Glad to hear your daughter is ok. Mr. Cat hit a deer this weekend but it was with a bullet. Tasted yummy last night!

Probably the best she didn't see it, may have swerved out of reaction...nothing good comes from swerving in most cases.

jericho Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Did she hurry up and cut the tenderloin out?
uk#1fan Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Doesn't look like the air bag came out? I hit a deer doing 60 and the air bag never game out. It did 8 grand worth of damages to my car and ran off plus broke my ribs i nailed the steering wheel. It is deer season be careful driving at night and in the am.

Had that discussion this morning at work. No it didn't come out, evidently it's more than just "hitting something" at speed is what I am being told, also needs to be a drastic/quick loss of velocity. Hitting a deer but not having a drastic drop in the velocity of the vehicle ( which is what happened here) won't make the bag inflate, again at least what I'm being told. I'm going to investigate more.
lawildcat Posted November 16, 2015 Posted November 16, 2015 Frontal air bags are generally designed to deploy in "moderate to severe" frontal or near-frontal crashes, which are defined as crashes that are equivalent to hitting a solid, fixed barrier at 8 to 14 mph or higher. (This would be equivalent to striking a parked car of similar size at about 16 to 28 mph or higher.)
