Walk on vs. Preferred Walk On

Featured Replies

Question: What type of offer coincides with being a Preferred Walk on? Does that mean that the student athlete has to find other ways to pay for his education? Ultimately what I am asking is what is the difference between being a regular walk on and being a "Preferred" Walk on?

Usually preferred walk-ons are guaranteed a spot, walk-ons have to try out.

A few things:

First - neither are different in regards to money - no athletic money coming your way.

PWO gets to start practice with the team in the summer. Non-PWO has to wait until the first day of class.

PWO does not "try out." He's on the team.

I THINK there are some differences between being allowed to dine at the athlete's team dining table.

So a preferred walk on is told they are on the team, but they are not promised a future scholarship or anything?

In most cases, yes.

Not promised, but there is the hint that since you are a preferred walk-on, if you work hard and are beneficial to the team, perhaps junior or senior year some scholarship money will come your way. no promises but big chances to earn it.

What he said, but to add to that neither have money attached. You are more likely to earn a scholarship coming from a preferred walk on spot than just walking on, as you would have to try out and not even be guaranteed to make the team at all in the first place.

Think long and hard before taking any kind of walk-on spot. I would ask the coach how many walkon or PWO schollies has the program given out in the last few years. There is no extra benefits to being a PWO vs a WO...except u probably will go to camp..for D1 that's only 105 players. Do your research and be realistic better to go to a lower division and play and get $$ then being a D1 walk-on and not playing.

I think PWO gets all the benefits except room, books, and tuition. Training table etc is part of the PWO deal.

Works well for the school when they get a highly motivated, talented athlete whose Pops has slapped braces on every kid in a 50 mile radius. Did my kids now working on the Grandkids. Lots of nice smiles.

As has been said in this thread, "Preferred" brings you in as a part of the 105 that are in camp before school starts. You may be housed and fed during camp. When school starts, the remainder of the walk-ons enter the program and the "preferred" gives you no more reward than the rest of the walk-ons. However, it is likely that the coaches at least know who you are!

Didn't Charles Walker RB from St X start that way at UK? Saw him making tackles against Georgia last Saturday. He was one of the only ones!!

He is a PWO.

He is a PWO.

Thank you Clyde! I feel he can earn a scholarship if he continues playing the way he is currently. One of the best players UK has on kick coverages! Hope he gets one!
