November 19, 201510 yr Author There is no other sport of any kind like duck hunting. I am fortunate to live along the central flyway and it is a way of life for the males in my family Lucky joker
November 19, 201510 yr Well, let's go. The duck boat had some issues last year. I asked CWB if he was interested and I think I ended up replacing the motor. However, knock on wood, the new honda 4stroke is money. And thank God my boat is long enough that we won't have to fold you to get you in it. Ha I'm probably going to be stuck having to keep to weekends...but I'd love to go with you this year if you're up for a weekend hunt.
November 19, 201510 yr Growing up my dad and a group of his friends leased 1,200 acres for 20 years from Westvaco about a mile off the Mississippi River on the banks of the Bayou De Chien Creek, this is the creek that forms Hickman Harbor in Hickman, Kentucky on the Mississippi River. This is a natural cross roads area for ducks traveling down the flyway that stop over in the southward migration. I say crossroads because the waterfowl stop in the flooded fields here and it is a cross roads between the rice fields of Missouri just a few miles west and Reelfoot Lake. Being along the river we get a lot of different species of ducks. Sadly the lease ran out in the mid 1990's and Westvaco decided to give the property to the state and it is now public hunting. Luck for me thanks to having grown up on this property and running the backwater when it got out I came to know most of the local property owners and was able to secure a lease of my own on the opposite side of the Bayou de Chein. Over the last 10-15 years MO. has done a lot around to improve and attract more of the birds and as a direct result it has hurt the Kentucky hunting some but it is a sure thing anytime the Mississippi River gets out. We don't get a lot of geese though but that is not a problem that a quick trip to Ballard cant fix. The Ballard County Refuge has draws that you can apply for or you can show up and hunt stand by and usually get in a pit. Its usually very productive but I myself prefer duck hunting.
November 20, 201510 yr Author I'm probably going to be stuck having to keep to weekends...but I'd love to go with you this year if you're up for a weekend hunt. I'd love that. Needs to be freezin for us to do well. So I'm praying for cold weather. Then after duck season I'm ready for spring.:walk:
November 20, 201510 yr I'd love that. Needs to be freezin for us to do well. So I'm praying for cold weather. Then after duck season I'm ready for spring.:walk: Is the cold weather preferable because the bodies of water the are I up North freeze cutting off their food supply so they head South?
November 20, 201510 yr Author Is the cold weather preferable because the bodies of water the are I up North freeze cutting off their food supply so they head South? Yes and no. If all the little ponds and creeks freeze, all those ducks and those resident geese that poop all over every golf green around will have no choice but to go to the river. And then we know where they are to go choot em.
November 23, 201510 yr Bert, we will get together as the weather changes and the season gets here. I look forward to it. Gotta have your license, duck stamp, and now they make you fill out a goofy HIP survey before you can hunt waterfowl. We just need it to get cooooooold. Is the cold front over the weekend helping or this is just a teaser of how cold it needs to be?
November 23, 201510 yr Author Is the cold front over the weekend helping or this is just a teaser of how cold it needs to be?It helps push those ducks down this direction, but mostly a teaser
November 24, 201510 yr Author Thursday is just wood duck correct? Or is every hint fair game? Nope, full blown duck season. And gooses.
