Duck Season

Extremely hard shots, water backs into a wooded area. Makes for creative shooting.

Or I could say I just missed... :(

I will echo the statements previously made, and say that duck/ goose season has been dismal this year. Aside from the lack of cold weather, I have the the relatively calm river level working against me. We hunt in a field along the Ohio River, and when the river comes up the field floods and is a honey hole. Last year (after the season unfortunately) when the river was at its highest, we had thousands of ducks in our area. Because the river is staying low this year, we are considering renting a 6" Trash Pump and flooding their field ourselves. But, then we run into the problem of the water just draining through the sediment and being out $400 with no water.

Hopefully we can get a good ground freeze, followed by a monsoon, accompanied by a rising river. Until then, our season isn't looking good.

You are going to get your flooded field and at least colder weather within the week! Happy Hunting...

Catch anything?

Haha yeah the past few days have been pretty nice for us. The field filled up, and is now on the verge of over filling and swallowing up our blind. Needless to say we wont be needing to pump any water in this year. Now if we can just get every other pond in the area to freeze up and leave us with the only open water in the area that would be great.

Low of 26 degrees Thursday night and high of 35 for Friday! :thumb:

National Weather Service

That's not enough. Need about 2 weeks of that or better and it to be colder than that farther north for the quackers to hit the road south.

Did you get out at all this weekend Spin? Saw a bunch of ducks flying on Friday and Saturday, but didn't very many geese at all. Wondering if you saw the same.

We didn't. Actually I was in EKY and was gonna go, but it rained all morning Saturday, ended up working on the duckboat under the cover of the barn instead. Hoping to go Thursday or Friday, I'll let the weather dictate that one.

^ My buddy gets all fired up when temps are in the teens and single digits so I get that. Just figured with the whole El Nino scenario playing out colder temps ( sub 40 ) may help!

So where are the quackers traveling south from?

I think we are kinda in the middle. We don't get too many strays from the Mississippi flyway but we get some from the great lakes. The few banded birds I've taken have all been from the Northeast. Of course I took a goose that was banded 3 years earlier about 10 minutes from where I shot the thing. ha
