Qualifying for Playoffs

Featured Replies

Because every kid is entitled to the playoffs so that nobody can have their heartbroken. Entitlement is the norm.

Yes because it is much better to drive 3-4 hours and to lose 70-0 in a first round playoff game then to turn your equipment in. KHSAA is just flat out ridiculous.

So the winner in an all catholic league would be different than the current class 6A how exactly?

Are you saying that any of the teams listed here have the same chance as Male, Scott County or Simon Kenton? Or that it's fair to force them to play schools three-to-six times their size? Not counting Conner and Cooper (because they volunteered to move up) even the smallest 6A school is more than half Trinity/St. X's enrollment.

Just saying, Male is the favorite this year and Scott County won the title only two years ago. 6A is not nearly as unbalanced as an all Catholic League would be.

EDIT: Also, there are still too few teams to form a decent league with only eleven. Even if you added other private schools you'd only be at fourteen (1A KCD, 2A CAL and 2A LCA).

I think less people would complain about an 0-10 team making the playoffs if they were not meeting the #1 seed in the first round.

If you want to let everyone find a way to avoid the #1 vs #4 matchups that often result in such lopsided scores.

The problem even with only having 4 classes is the fact that the huge difference in enrollment from the bottom of class 4 and the top of the class 4 teams. It's already a huge advantage for the big schools in Louisville and making it 4 classes will only hurt more schools. What they need is what other states have and hat is separate Catholic leagues etc and public. Never understood why it is such a big resistance to that in KY.

Here we go again. I was waiting on it. lol

My favorite time of year in high school football, be mad about teams that should not be in. Folks the Coaches and AD's wanted this- sit back and enjoy it. This is only 1 week we have to deal it

What I'm saying is Catholic big schools will always have an unfair advantage period. You can argue all you want but there is a huge advantage to be able to...dare I say it?

I think a 14 team playoff would be plenty of teams for that league.

Any idea how many private (Catholic or otherwise) schools play football in Kentucky?

And, any idea what the breakout is in class (6A, 5A, etc.)?

Its just not fair to not put everyone in the playoffs! :lol2:

 That tired argument again.

If you have any proof of the activity you allude to, then alert the KHSAA. Otherwise you've got nothing but baseless accusations that sound like envy for a successful program.

Also, please explain how Male is the favorite this year and have an 8-1 record against St. X and Trinity for the past three years (2013-2015) if Catholic schools 'always have an unfair advantage'.

So every player that plays for Trinity over the lets say past 29'years all live in the neighborhood surrounding the school? Wow, they must have some special water in those drinking fountains.

Now I never said they did anything "illegal" just that they have a big advantages to be able to attract athletes that other schools can't. That is all.

How many state titles does T have and St X have over the last 15 years? Trinity and St X have won a total of 13 and Male and Scott Co have won 1 each.

All the 6As and all the 1As go to post-season. Period. There are only 32 teams in each class.

The other 4 classes have 39 or 40 teams in them and it is only from these classes that the 29 or 30 teams that do not make the playoffs come from.

At most basic level KHSAA creates different circumstances for similarly situated teams/players/schools in a arbitrary and capricious manner with its setup. It get somewhat worse with the 6 team districts in the 4 classes that are not 'guaranteed' to get all their teams in. So even in the 4 middle classes if you play on a team in a 4 team district - you are in the playoffs - just like classes 1A and 6A. If you are in a 6 team district your pure mathematical odds drop to 67% to make the playoffs. If you are 0 - 10 in a 5 or 6 team district you are definitely not going to the playoffs. But a 0 - 10 in a 4 team district - which includes all of 1A and 6A. 0 - 10 gets you in.

No one really wants to acknowledge why there are 6 team districts but the answer is distance. And the distrance factor is driven by the 6 class factor. Going from 4 to 6 classes stretches district and region physical distances. Mathematically there should be no 6 team districts. There should only be 4 or 5 team districts.

Along with the inequity above it seems if you can get 192 of 220 teams in you should get them all in. If an 'expanded' playoff format improved participation then a 'universal playoff' format should be the goal. Why leave some out of this great experience if it actually improves participation rates?

To do this the class make would likely have to back to 4 classes and the playoffs would need to go to 6 weeks. Both unlikely.

But if they did.... the math is easy - and interesting if you bracket the playoffs to leverage the number of teams.

4 classes x 8 regions x 7 teams (districts would go away). This provides a 2 level playoff system that would support up to 224 teams (4 x 8 x 7). Kentucky has 220 or 221 teams right now.

Regional playoff seeding - 1/Bye, 6/7 and 2/5, 3/4. Region champions named in first 3 weeks, State tournament would be blind draw of regions (eliminate East-West prefixed bracketing).

- Alll teams are in post season

- Two bottom teams have play-in game giving them a shot at post season win and something to build on. Just having a potentially winnable first round game would probably be good.

- Winning regular season region gets the winning team a bye in week one, the winner of 6/7 game in round two. So basically an easy right into the Championship. Other side of bracket is tough road. So winning regular season region would be something of value.

- Random draw takes away the predictability of the brackets. Adds some excitement to process.

So that's it. My annual appeal for an all inclusive system. Its DOA....but mathematically - it works and creates some interesting dynamics.

How many state titles does T have and St X have over the last 30 years? Just curious.

Nice attempt at deflection, but if what you are saying is even close to true. How does Male have that 8-1 record? You didn't address that.

And to reflect on an earlier point, if Trinity and St. X have that unfair of an advantage over teams within their own class, how would it be fair to force four 1A teams and six 2A teams into a league with them?

Chuckle, I notice you changed it from 30 to 15 because there were an additional five public school wins in the 'thirty year' category.

I never said that in the history of high school football that a team besides T or StX would never win state. I did address it by the way when I said in the last 15 years T and St X won 13 titles combined and Scott Co and Male won 1 each.

Those 1A teams have the same advantage that T and St X have so hey are in the same boat. Their size isn't my worry. Equal playing field is what matters and they all have the same capabilities to attract out of area students.
