Why Should High School Coaches Be Fired?

Featured Replies

I think W/L plays a role but you have to have an administration that is realistic. You can't fire a guy in a program that doesn't have a chance to be competitive due to locations, roster, etc.

Not every team is going to win state championships, but I think growth, or maintaining a status quo of winning should be expected of every coach. If you can't turn a program into a winner then what are you doing at a program?

Your exact words just like I said.

So, did you see the question mark ????????????????????????????

Then ?????????? If an admin hired the totally unqualified guy he is stupid and needs to be fired. I'm not going to run from my statement like you.

I'm not running from anything, it's a hard stance to say that an administrator should be fired over a coach. High school sports are extra-curricular and certainly not the main focus for hiring a teacher. A good quality, yes. A significant part of the equation, to be a coach, at times.

To fire an administrator over a poor hiring decision....do you have any idea how many second guessing, arm chair quarterbacks there are in high school sports ? On any given night the answer is half the stands.....

All I am saying about your post is you're a little over the top...but as I said previously, I suspect you have a personal axe to grind on some administrator somewhere over a losing team somewhere, or at least a team you think should be coached by someone else.

Fair enough, you win. All administrators who have hired bad coaches should be fired....that should fix the standardized test scores and play to all the parents who think their kid is the next D-1 sensation. Go with that.

I already said I'm harder on most school systems / administrators than most on this board...how far do you want me to go ? It's not like employees of school systems have "Hiring 101" as a core competency for administrators.....

I'm glad you're so smart. You didn't read my post I guess. I explained in detail what I would do given the exact circumstance you said. Not every circumstance just the exact one you laid out. IF and administrator who has no athletic background is too stupid to put together a group to advise him on something that he is weak on and hires a coach who does not know the game and has an inability to coach kids then that admin is too stupid to lead a school. YOU laid out the criteria. There actually happen to be a super small amount of head coaches who are that bad. I personally can't name any right now. I'm glad you are so smart.

Well at least I'm not too stupid...thanks for the compliment. Enjoy your season

You're a great teacher.

You're a great role model.

Your teams play competitively.

You're a valuable member of the community.

You play in a tough district.

You also win 40% of your games.

That's enough to fire the guy?

The Pope could come coach Trinity and after 3 years if he is winning only at a 40% clip then he's getting run out of town on a rail. Not saying it's right, but that's what would happen.

W/L record HAS to be a part of the overall discussion. Should it be #1? Absolutely NOT. But should it be #3, #5, #8? It has to be on the spectrum somewhere. Otherwise, as someone said above, you could have a great guy coaching that has absolutely no idea what he's doing on the football field, which is not what you want...not what most schools would want anyway. And after all, coaching football if part of their JOB. When getting evaluated on their job, wins and losses has to be discussed at some point. Of course, winning and losing is all relative as well depending on the ability of the kids you have, so that has to be figured into the equation. One coach who goes 2-8 but that's the best the team could do has done a better job than the guy who went 4-6 but had the talent level to go 8-2. It's all relative.

And by the way, being a good man and being a good coach do NOT have to be mutually exclusive.

Is anyone else blown away that we have people on here who truly think that coaches, coaches should not be evaluated on wins and losses? You are supposed to coach football games. I mean, what else would a coach be evaluated on? I am so confused, not every team has to win a championship but every single school in the state should be judged on wins and losses and its the AD's job to know rather or not a team should be doing more than what they are doing with what they have on the field.

I think schools are going to have to go the route of hiring just coaches or not having athletics at all in the 6 major sports.....and only 3 of those are major in real life but title IX......

Volleyball, football, B/G basketball, baseball, and softball.

At some point, one has to wonder what is wrong INSTEAD of talent. Are kids not playing because of the culture of continuously losing? Sometimes there is talent at the School that never hits the field. I'm aware of one School that is 13W and 70L in the past 8 seasons with a 12~point per game average and been shut out 24 times in that time frame. I just don't buy that there is no talent inh an 8 year stretch. Maybe the coach, maybe the staff(or lack thereof) if funding issues, culture, or maybe both. :idunno:

Perhaps it should be based on the percentage of pay overall. So if you get 10% of your salary from football contract, then 10% of your coaching evaluation should be based on W's...would that be a logical way to use W/L records?

Lets say that an admin fires a good football coach and hires a dud. The coach underachieves with a team that should have won a lot more games. Don't you think that admin should be fired?

There would be several superintendents looking for jobs if that were the case! I can think of several right now that would sweat just thinking about it!

Wins and losses matter, but can't and shouldn't be the only factor.
