Why Should High School Coaches Be Fired?

Featured Replies

Came up in another thread. Guru, misguided as he is, disagrees with my stance.

I say W/L should NOT be why you fire a high school football coach. I say there are valid reasons to fire them but W/L is not on the list.

Coaches are limited as to talent they get to work with. Now you have less kids playing football and specializing elsewhere so it's even fewer talented kids you may have at your disposal. They don't get to go out and sign free agents or recruit kids. They're stuck with whom they get put on them.

Secondly, high school football is PART of the high school experience. It is not THE high school experience and firing simply for W/L tells the students that it's all that matters.

Lastly, most of these cats are teachers in the school system. You're not almost forcing them to uproot and go elsewhere - all because some 16 year old kid and his buddies weren't talented enough to win games.

Wrong message for high school.

Have at it.

You're argument is strong- but don't think some kids aren't recruited. Not so much in football but in basketball; kids will transfer on a whim also.

Some areas are much easier than others for transferring. It's very easy in NKY but not so much in Owenton or Greenville.

90% of coaches are not out recruiting. They can't be judged on the talent they "bring in."

To be completely honest, I can't even wrap my head around the idea of wins and losses NOT being a factor in firing a coach...

Sure there are more important lessons learned when playing football than just what the scoreboard reads after each game. But to suggest that W/L shouldn't factor at all, I just can't agree with that.

If you're being paid to coach football, you need to win games. If you want to be a Guidance Counselor, do that.

You're a great teacher.

You're a great role model.

Your teams play competitively.

You're a valuable member of the community.

You play in a tough district.

You also win 40% of your games.

That's enough to fire the guy?

Good point. Coaches can let excuses outnumber losses. Hungry coaches can beat fat and happy ones.

It's boils down to $$$$$. Winning teams put butts in seats and money to the school coffers, losing teams usually don't.

Love this thread. I agree with Clizzy. W/L shouldn't be a reason to fire a high school coach. When coaches are hired and fired their W/L record is never publicly mentioned as a reason for the hiring of firing. I hate the act that we all know is false. I'd rather schools be open and honest about it than go through the charade of acting like W/L aren't the only reason they were hired and fired.

If we are going to treat HS like college then there should be written contracts with dollar amounts, length of deal and buyouts listed in black and white. How will the position be evaluated and what are the expectations written out for all to see.

The actual W/L record may not be, in itself, a legitimate reason. What if the W/L record can absolutely be attributed to a coach not knowing the game or how to coach ?

I would guess that some schools offer the head coaching jobs up to teachers as an opportunity to supplement their salary, prior to going outside the school. Say that amount averages $5,000 a year for gate related sports. Teacher is willing to put the time in to get that dough, but doesn't have a clue about the game, coaching or anything.

Is W/L record a factor then ?

Too vague. Who decides? Easy route to take if you're unhappy with the W/L record. How did he get hired in the first place?

Principal who never played the game

Fire that administrator and let the next one hire a new coach.

How much input should the kids have? If year after year you hear the large percentage of kids state they do not like the coaching staff (could be for numerous legit reasons and even from programs with winning seasons) and that the current coaching staff is making it no fun to play anymore, should the coach keep his job and kids have no say?

Fire that administrator and let the next one hire a new coach.

So you would fire an otherwise qualified administrator that hired a bad coach ? If I am reading that right it sounds really off base.
