Still say the 2000 Beechwood team was one of the best ever to not win a State Championship. And in the 17-14 loss to NCC 10 of NCC 17 points were courtesy of the NCC defense.

One factor of concern for Beechwood in this game is special teams play. Jacob Smith is a dangerous return man. I believe Beechwood has not punted a ball since September 18, 5 games ago. They did a good job on McGinness in the Cov Cath game, who is just as good as Smith on returns, but that was September 18. They will have to put in some extra work on special teams this week in practice.

McGinness didn't have a chance to return the punts. They were directional and travelled about an average of 20 yards. As a result, CovCath had GREAT field position on 4 key drives from mid-1st quarter through half time. I don't like Beechwood's running punt. That is one big chink in their armor.

Slusher has done a great job this year. Don't remember details on Cov Cath game, but he has taken off running several times over last couple years. I think CCH might be last time BW has punted.

I'm not convinced that these two teams are so far apart talent-wise. Other than CovCath, Beechwood's schedule is not super impressive. They have beaten the teams that should have but have not played a strong schedule.

NCC on the other hand has played a very challenging schedule but really hasn't done much with it. They've beaten who they should have (most not as convincingly as you would expect) but have had opportunities to beat larger schools and come up short.

I think this could be more of a challenge for Beechwood than expected. They will have to punt, they will get pushed around some on the line, they will have some pressure on the QB and they've had none of that since the middle of September.

This is a great game for each team in preparation for the playoff run. But I get the feeling that the results are honestly more important to other areas in the state than it is to Beechwood and NCC. The rest of the state uses it to gauge the strength of 1A and 2A in NKY. I get the feeling that Paintsville and Danville will be watching the outcome closely.

So I would be curious as to your opinion of that less tha "super impressive" schedule. Ironton was a really good team. Lost first 4 but haven't lost since. I think those 4 teams have a combined 5 losses, including a 14-6 loss to Wheelersburg, the #2 rated D5 team in Ohio. Somerset only lost 24-7 to Danville, they were starting the buses and headed to the lake for Labor Day parties in the 2nd quarter when they played BW.

Or is it the soft 2a schedule, you know the NCC district? I believe NCC struggled with both Holy Cross and Lloyd, games went right to the wire. BW had second team in vs both those teams very early in 3rd quarter, blow outs. Newport? It was 42-0 in the first quarter.

This may be a close game, but it won't be because of a soft schedule. Tigers laid an egg vs Cov Cath. NCC laid one vs Cooper. It happens.

The Tigers having not plate nobody simce CovCath makes no difference. It happens every year. Their district is not very good year in amd year out so their starters play a half at best. They are always more tham ready to finish the season off vs NewCath amd make a solid playoff run. Im taking the beechies by A LOT!!!!

Slusher punted 4 times in the Cov Cath game.

1. Boomed a punt that had CCH starting their drive from their own 7

2. Punted the ball over 40 yards from his own end zone and McGinness returned it 30 yards.

3. Punted the ball over 40 yards.

4. Short punt that only went about 20 yards.

For a prediction, I am going to go with Beechwood 31 New Cath 21. If Beechwood has no turnovers, add another TD to their number and make it 38-21.

There you go again, letting facts get in the way of a good argument. I don't remember the punting game ever hurting them.

I stand corrected. It was the 2 in the second quarter that really put CovCath in a great spot. That's what I get for going off of memory

 mexitucky I've heard that aloe vera gel is good for 3rd degree burns.

You appear to be a little defensive of the schedule Beechwood has played. First of all, I said they did what they should have with that schedule so they have taken care of business. And while NCC has played a stronger schedule, they have failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

But to your question of a what I mean by a "less than impressive schedule", I'll answer this way. I agree that the 2A district is typically pretty soft, so why does that make up your non-conference schedule? Somerset isn't any good this year and was 0-10 last year. Ironton isn't the team you'd like to make them out to be either. Max Preps ranks them 271st in Ohio. The only really good team the R&W Tigers played this year is CovCath and they got waxed.

Now before you get your shorts in a bunch, I will say again, Beechwood has done more with their schedule than NCC has done with theirs. I also didn't say it would be a close game because of the schedule Beechwood has played. What I said was, I think these two teams will be better matched than people are expecting. That is why each team plays this game just prior to the playoffs.

What is the status of the 3 NCC defensive starters that either did not play against Newport or left the game early and did not return?

Burns? You must be from the 80's, early 90s.

Without their status, it is really hard to say what the score could be. Either way, Beechwood is the favorite.
