It is not like kicking it deep in Freshman football is going to pin anyone deep.

Really? How many times was Ryle forced to start drives from their own 20 yard line after kickoffs last evening?

I agree, I think he would benefit more by playing JV next year rather than playing freshman ball again.

Why would you bring a kid up just to play JV? I believe they only way that he will move up is if he could contribute on Varsity..... or if you need numbers and the birds probably don't need that.

Yeah, really! So, HHS has a good freshman kicker, good for them.

Where was HHS starting their drives? If they were pinning them deep, then I like the idea of an onside kick even better.

Still nothing wrong with trying an onside kick, even if you kick it to the endzone every time. Attempting it does not mean you don't think you can win.

Yeah I get what you mean, however if he is playing so well on the freshman squad as an 8th grader I think he would benefit more by practicing all summer long going against varsity guys rather than the freshman team. I understand JV games are nothing compared to varsity games but the idea of him getting to practice with and against varsity players all summer would be great. Just my opinion but I don't know anything.

I left after the 3rd, but up to that point Ryle had only kicked off that one time. So to answer your question, because of that, their average start after a kickoff was around the 50 yard line.

Yeah hindsight is 20/20. if they would have recovered it he would be a genius.

Agree, you are probably giving up a max of 20 yards of field position. Reward at that level far out ways the risk.

There is a thread on the HS coach who always onside kicks, uses all four downs(no punts) regardless of spot on field, and goes for 2pt conversion.

The Bluebird kicker puts them deep into the endzone.

The original complaint was about Ryle attempting onside kick and sacrificing the yards. How far Highlands' kicker kicks the ball is not relevant.

It was not a complaint. It was an observation and a point of view. The Ryle coach can choose to do whatever he likes. I, as an observer, thought it was a bad call for reasons I have already stated.

@doubledeuce, you are right about the HHS Frosh kicker. He's the best freshman kicker I've seen this year. Very impressive.

Can I ask a serious question? Why talk trash regarding freshman football? These kids are all learning how to play. You got kids in various stages of growth, skill development, athletic development, and understanding of the game. They have three more years to play and some of those things begin to even out. Let them learn in a spirit of good sportsmanship, not one upsmanship. Makes for better human beings. That's one thing football guys always say football is good for, creating better men.

Teach them to respect their opponent, as well. I like to see kids on the field that help one another up, and at the end of the game shake hands with the opponent and offer sincere well-wishes for the future. Chest thumpin', trash talk, and ridiculing the opponent is beneath a good athlete and his teammates.

I feel like Ryle is climbing the Highlands rivalry tree right??? id say theyre like 2 by now right?

Possibly since HHS has played them more than any other NKY team over the past several years except for CCH and probably Dixie. It would be nice to keep all the NKY 6A schools on the schedule in the future as it's a lot more exciting than playing downstate teams. Camp Co would be a natural rivalry if they can get their program winning more.

I agree with NKY playing each other each year. Win or lose it's fun to compete against HHS just because of their history. And you guys get really worked up. Great entertainment!

As far as having a freshman playing up and practicing with JV/Varsity, I don't think i am a huge fan of it. I think the camaraderie built within the freshmen class is something that is pretty understated. Freshmen year is the only year in which you play solely with kids your age, and that enables a bond between those in each specific class to be built. I get that having a freshman practicing with JV puts them against better competition, but you lose out on sharing those long hot summer days with those in your own class. Now, if a freshmen practices with his freshmen team, and is then brought up on Saturdays to get a few extra game time reps in with the JV, I think that could be beneficial.
