Would like to know how Ashland got it colors and name. The name I heard a story about it. In the early 1900s the coach was watching over his players practicing and said to an assistant that they looked like a bunch of Tomcats fighting. Not sure if this is true or not. Hopefully someone else can shed light on this and give us your teams story.

The Ashland fight song is also the same as UKs.

Trinity's colors are a combination of St. Xavier's green and the white from the late, great Bishop Flaget High School.

Raceland used to be called the "Ramblers" because they had no home basketball court or football field, they played all their games on the road, Ramblers. Later, after building a gym and a football field the name was shortened to just "Rams". Over the years, there have been a few times when the basketball team returned to the "Ramblers" name and had it printed on their jerseys.

 

Colors, I'm not sure about, but I heard once that the two cities that make up the Raceland School District: Raceland and Worthington, used to have their own community football teams and Worthington was black and white, and Raceland was Orange and white and when the school adopted the athletic teams, they chose Black, Orange and White as the school colors.

Covington Catholic was founded by the Marianists, who are a congregation of Catholic brothers and priests who claim a particular devotion to the Virgin Mary as a model of faith and spirituality. The school's devotion to Mary gave way to its colors, blue and white, taken from the blue and white colors traditionally associated with Mary's tunic and mantle.

 

Cov Cath's Colonel mascot is primarily derived from the "Christian soldier" allegory, which comes from St. Paul's letter to the Ephesians where he said, "...be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full Armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."

 

That being the case, the school was looking for a mascot that fit the 'soldier' idea, and I guess they liked the sound of the Covington Catholic Colonels better than the Covington Catholic Corporals, Captains or Commodores. The school actually included a photo of Colonel W.S. Gilbreath in their 1934 yearbook (which was right around the time they started using the "Colonel" as their mascot), and cited him as one of the inspirations behind the Covington Catholic Colonels. Gilbreath had been a Captain in the US Army during the Civil War, was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, and after going back to the civilian world, he was the man who conceived of and helped create the Dixie Highway through his involvement with the Detroit Automobile Owner's Club and the Michigan State Highway Commission.

My brother and I digitally recorded it for the school about a decade ago from an original 45 rmp record we were loaned by Coach Tieman.

Glen Burnie (MD) Gophers. Red and white. No clue on Gophers, I always assumed that red and white was because out of around 2100 students, probably 80% of them were white rednecks.

Although I am just fine with the "Rams", I have to say I wouldn't be opposed to going back to "Ramblers". Actually the Russell / Raceland rivalry game would be a very good one to do it on, if just for the one game per season. One of the best known rivalries in EKY / NEKY in the years when Raceland were the "Ramblers" was the Ramblers vs. Red Devils. I would say that the Ashland / Boyd Co. rivalry was the other well known rivalry.

 

Then again, since the rivalry was revived around 8 years ago - the RAMS are 5-1 and on a 5 game win streak so the Rams is fine. lol
