Tackling in football isn't just a Highlands issue. I've noticed it at many levels, pee wee, high school and college. I think it has to due to the limited contact in practices which is related to and most importantly the concussion issues. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but coaches are playing it safer these days. However, tackling can be taught the right way with good technique and reps. But it involves proper headgear placement, eyes up and wrapping up the opposing runner. Again, it's not just a Highlands issue.

Google Seattle Seahawks Tackling Drills. This is a technique that we are using in the FTJFL(Blue) alongside Headsup Football that we also teach. If it is working for the Seahawks at the Pro level then it will work at all levels. Just my 2 Cents!

Couldn't agree more. Pete Carroll started using this technique back in his days at USC. The concept is "eye the outside thigh" based on the sport of Rugby. Happy to hear youth coaches are adapting to it!

Glad to see many understood where I was coming from with my questioning. You cannot tackle if you are not in position to do so. Getting driven to the parking lot or pancaked is not going to enable you to make tackles at the point of attack.

Teams do not practice tackling for the various reasons stated already. 98 mentioned the way tackling was taught years ago, but not today. I had discussions with high school coaches years ago about how tackling was taught nowadays and the explanation I received was breast plate to breast plate which reduces the chance of neck injuries and/or concussions.

The biggest thing for me however is having the heart, desire and intestinal fortitude to want to be in on as many tackles as possible. This is the one thing that you cannot teach however.

Dixie is no good, Highlands will go Highlands on them.

Ohio State used it last year and is this year as well.

That actually explains alot.

Can you expound "a lot" for us simpletons? I don't coach football but have a pretty feel on how to tackle.

This week is when the Birds begin to march this season back to where they want it to be. They have had a chance to heal up and work on a game plan for the rest of the season, so no less than a 21 point win for HHS in this one. Next week they grind out a W against the Blue Colonels and they pound BC and Grant after that. Then they storm into the playoffs with huge confidence and momentum.

I like it!

Gap assignment and the right personnel on the field and in the correct position. Tyler Browning is not on this d-line. Depth is not your friend. My thoughts.

Love the Tyler Browning reference! he was a hobgoblin tackle machine!
