Found an Exercise I Love

I've actually never seen an Olympic pool in person. Every pool in the Danville area is 25 yards.
Ft Knox has an indoor one. Etown Swim and Fitness Center has an outdoor one. ESFC typically holds the state meet for USA Swimming.

Hey bug, will you give all of us some idea how many calories you burn when swimming great distances in cold water? I saw something once on a guy crossing the English Channel (at least I think that was it) and the amount of calories he was burning was mind boggling.

Which one burns more calories if you do it the same amount of time?
There isn't a straight-up answer here. Depends on numerous factors. Intensity, your weight, where you are running or cycling, etc.

Open Water Endurance Swimming - English Channel Swim Training, by Don Macdonald on 1Vigor

Nutrition Demands of Open Water Endurance Swimming

Nutritional endurance demands biochemical changes of your body. The basic calculation for the amount of calories burned while swimming is 2.93 calories per mile, per pound. I weigh 207 pounds, and therefore burn 14,556 calories in a 24-mile swim, (2.93 calories x 24 miles x 207 pounds = 14,556 calories). You must also add 10-15 percent of your burnt calorie total for the energy it takes your body to keep itself warm. In this case, adding another 1,500 calories. As you can imagine, it is difficult to eat 15,000 calories over a 13-hour period without training the stomach to handle this input.

I do agree with you. But for whatever reason I honestly could do stuff like that pre-triathlon days.

My guess is you are just a naturally gifted athlete like a friend of mine is and I am far from being. I got to the YMCA or Planet Fitness at least 5 times a week and run till I am exhausted at both. His most strenuous exercise is going to car to drive to White Castles for a sack of sliders. He runs a mile and is barely winded, I feel like I am about to die.

Another friend decided to try out weight training a few years ago, he recently quit his job as an associate professor and is now paid very well to be in ads for fitness products. Yeah, I a little jealous.

One thing I have noticed is that my strength in the weight room has gone down slightly when combined with swimming. Does this sound normal to you guys? For example, my bench press max has declined.

I'm not really complaining though because I've lost 20 lbs. and my chest and shoulders are starting to look really good...better than they have in years and years.

You said you swam 1/2 mile. How long did that take you?

It is really hard, if not impossible to do what your doing and not lose some strength.

1. Losing a decent amount of weight. Although alot of that is probably fat, it is impossible to loose that much weight and some of it not be muscle.

2. Long secession of higher intensity cardio. Short high intensity workouts or long low intensity are the best way to minimize muscle loss while burning more fat.

You can help combat this by eating more but in the end it's impossible to stop. It's just the trade off. Fat loss pretty much means muscle loss. Muscle gain pretty much means fat gain.

My ultimate swimming goal is this race:

Swim Around Key West | 12.5-mile endurance swim around the island of Key West, Florida

12.5 mile swim. :D

Maybe the worst produced show in the history of television from a few years ago was a program called "Endurance Traveler." He went around and did various IMs and other races. He did the Swim Around the Keys and it looked miserable. People get sick and are disoriented like no other. You need to come do this race up here. Extreme North Dakota Watersports Endurance Test (END-WET) | Extreme North Dakota Racing

We had a thread about someone kayaking the Mississippi. There is a guy that just recently took off that is swimming the entirety of the Mississippi. Now that is hardcore.

My coaching partner knows a group of people who did the Swim Around the Keys and really enjoyed it.
The biggest problem I had was learning how to breathe correctly. For years and years, I have been able to swim but always kept my nose out of the water. To swim correctly, you must keep your head under water and come up for a quick breath during your stroke. It looks east but it's not as easy as it seems.

Keeping my head underwater and coming up for breaths was always natural for me. I always liked being able to see the painted line so I know I am staying in my lane and not swerving over into someone's next to me. I sure my form could be better but I think for a casual swimmer it is decent.

This is on the bucket list too: ÖTILLÖ | The swimrun world championship

ÖTILLÖ is a unique race in a unique environment. Teams of two race together from island to island (Ö till Ö). The teams swim between the 26 islands and run over them. The total distance is 75 kilometres of which 10 km are open-water swimming and 65 km are trail-running

There is an exercise I absolutely love, too, and with Mrs. S still up in Cincinnati, I'm really getting out of shape.

Here is an article about Pippa Middleton doing Otillo (Princess Kate's sister).

Some pics of her finishing it.

The original article that turned me onto the race.

History: So these guys made a drunken bet…

No really. “I went to a garage to fix my car,” Lemmel says. “The owner of the garage was also the owner of the hotel, which is now where we finish the race on the island of Utö. He told me his other partner and two employees had gotten drunk in the bar one night, and they had challenged each other to go from Utö to Sandhamn 75 kilometers away, which is where we have the start line now, the next day. The bet was the last of the pairs to get to the hotel in Sandhamn would pay for the drinks, and also pay for the hotel rooms. But when they did arrive, the hotel was fully booked and they all had to sleep outside. So they did it a second year, and it was just after the second year that I met this man at the garage and he said, ‘Do you think this could be an idea that you could make something from?’”

Hardcore factor:

10/10. If you don’t die of exhaustion or hypothermia, there’s always the chance of getting drowned by a hydrophilic moose. “Last year we had a moose swimming on the course with us,” Lemmel says.
