Found an Exercise I Love

Featured Replies

Off days for swimming is by choice, isn't it? Or do the muscles need an off day like lifting or running?

I thought running was an exercise that was fine to do every day?

Quick way to get hurt.

I wouldn't recommend doing anything every day. Your body needs rest days.

I swim 3-5 days a week. 2-4 days are shorter swims. 1 day is long swim

I am a horrendous swimmer. I can make it from one end of the pool to the other but it's not pretty and I tire out quickly.

People have tried to teach me but I'm still awful. I can't float to save my life either.

Did not know that, I thought only weight training daily was bad.

I wonder if we are risking high school and college athletes? During conditioning, the are absolutely running daily.

7 days a week?

I know of three cross country teams and their kids aren't even running 7 days a week.

There is an exercise I absolutely love, too, and with Mrs. S still up in Cincinnati, I'm really getting out of shape.

If it's less than 60 seconds, is it really considered exercise?

Dang, I thought this was going to be about sex.:D

I thought of this thread yesterday morning when listening to the Bob & Tom Show. Chick McGee said his excercise these days is outrage. I think I'm adopting that as mone. :D. Gets your heart pumping. If you yell, it gets your lungs going. If you're a hand talker like I am, you get your arms flailing. If you move into full-on mode you might fast walk or run a bit. Since I can't seim, outrage seems a perfectly suitable alternative. :D

My daughter swam for a US team for a while, and between in the water conditioning and drylands conditioning, it was all around the best program of excercise I've ever seen in any sport. Way out of my league, even if you take the swimming part out.

@bugatti and @formerkywrestler, When you guys swim, do you incorporate freestyle, breast stroke, butterfly, backstroke all into your workouts, or do you mostly just do the freestyle?

Definitely more free than anything else. But we do incorporate all four strokes into our workouts. During the summer it's not much, starting up next week we will really start to throw in fly, breast, and back.

On a personal level at a minimum I throw in other stroke work in either the warmup or cool down. Personal preferences go:

Free, Breast, Back, Fly.

Freestyle 90%-95% of the time. The most common stroke after that for me is breaststroke. My typical warm-up is a 400 yard swim, 75 FS / 25 BST. No person has ever given me much instruction on the other strokes. On the rare occasions I do backstroke I am beat. Butterfly, no hope.

Sans fins I can do 25 yards of butterfly before I feel like my heart has jumped out of my throat. Last year I swam the fly portion of a medley relay and at the end I couldn't get myself out of the pool without help, laid there for 5 minutes, and pulled out of the 100 breast four events later.

We have a girl who just started with us that swam fly in college -- she is also known as formerkywrestlersnewbestfriend.

Tip: Devices like the aforementioned fins, pull buoys, paddles, or snorkels, can be used to help improve technique :thumb:
