Me too! I suppose you could say the Moon landings were our Wright Brothers moment but the point is the "Wright Brothers" are where we are in the history of manned space exploration.

 

If you're so inclined, I can't recommend Robert Zubrin's "The Case for Mars" enough. He's a former NASA advisor who was one of the folks that helped develop the unused "Mars Direct" strategy for a manned mission to Mars. The book lays out the entire plan then ultimately puts it in the context of the ultimate goal being a series of missions that lead to a permanent outpost on Mars. It's great if you're at all interested in how a complete series of manned missions might work from start to finish.

It was fascinating watching those back in the 60's to early 70's. It is something to realize that the computers and laptops we use now at home are much more powerful than those used in the space program back then.

My wife and I went to a great lecture at Thomas More College last week regarding Mars travel. Dr. Ryle seems to schedule lectures around upcoming movies such as "The Martian" and "Interstellar". A great bonus was that it was a clear night and we got to see Saturn via the telescopes at the college Observatory.

Absolutely right. Which leads me to my next thought, we need to get our act together on this planet so that we ALL can work together for the survival of our species.

The problem with Mars is its magnetic field is gone which means Mars is bombarded with radiation 24 hours a day. One day we will have people living on Mars but for now we need to work on the science end of it more.

 

And to answer your question, I think it is possible the answer is both.

 

Exactly, Mars was probably once a very temperate planet until its core stopped spinning (thus stopped its magnetic field). Once that happened the layers of the atmosphere were stripped away and all that is left is what we see today.

 

This will definitely happen eventually to Earth, it's just a long way into our future. In all honesty given some of the things that happen in the universe it is pretty terrifying to think that so many things had to go just right for life to exist here.

Yeah it is crazy to think how many things get caught up in Jupiter's gravity. It is saved our skin on soooo many occasions.
